Enjoying Live Theatre Once Again!

On Thursday 24th February, students from Years 10 and 12 were able to take a trip to Chapel Off Chapel to see ‘Stardust’ and ‘The Mission’; a double-bill of one-man shows cataloguing the lives of two extraordinary Australians.

It has been a long year since we have been able to run such an excursion, and it was a delight to be back in the theatre!

A Culture of Reading

The English department is committed to creating a culture of reading in 2022!

In English classes Year 7-10 students visit the school library, read each day quietly and spend time discussing their chosen novels to develop an understanding of the importance of reading. We seek your support and encouragement of this program and ask that you talk to your child about what kind of books they are interested in.

Yes, you might get some eye rolling, however there are many reasons why reading can help your child develop new and valuable habits for not only their English studies but for life.

When students read on a regular basis, they begin to understand how writer’s write, they read new words and expand their vocabulary, they are more receptive to creativity and start to develop vital critical thinking skills (crucial for English!). Memory skills can be developed when you have to think back to the plot or characters and by reading about new cultures students can gain empathy for other people’s lives.

Grab a book, clean out that bookshelf, join a library, go to an op shop book section– let’s all join in to create a culture of reading in 2022.

Model Cell Project Brings Out the St Andrews Creative Thinkers

Year 8 students were assigned a project to create a model of a cell and the submissions showed the many creative ways our St Andrews students like to learn. One such cell project was pieced together with play dough!

Some students even created a model of a cell in Minecraft which was really fantastic – you can “fly” down to ground level and see the labels of all the parts. It's great to see how students applied a medium they are fluent in to show their science knowledge.

Year 10 students showed their understanding by forming a dance for a Meiosis project.

Year 7 Geography Class - Water Activity

The class was divided into 2 tribes and had to collect water from a 'tanker' to fill their "Wells".

Leaking containers as well as pirates stealing water made the task increasingly challenging. Afterwards the class discussed the difficulties that some groups had experienced in ensuring they have access to adequate and clean water supplies.

Year 8 Humanities

Year 8 students got actively involved in their humanities class this week learning how to drop, cover and hold in the event of an earthquake for their geomorphic hazard unit.

They also got creative measuring how high a tsunami wave is by the time it reaches the shore. Normally, these waves measure about 30 meters high. Together Year 8 discovered this also translates to 19 students high!
