St. Raphael's Testing Days

Last week your child attended an appointment at St. Raphael's to spend some time with their 2022 homeroom teacher. During this time they participated in tasks that enabled the teachers to gather data to inform their future teaching.

What Were The Literacy Assessments?

Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System Running Records

Foundation - Year 6

During a running record your child reads a text to their teacher.

Teachers will then:

  • Observe and quantify student reading behaviors
  • Engage students in comprehension conversations that go beyond retelling
  • Make informed decisions that connect assessment to responsive teaching.

This assessment will give teachers enough information to plan for and deliver targeted and differentiated guided reading lessons to enhance the development of reading and comprehending.

Marie Clay's Observation Survey

Foundation, Year 1 & Year 2

This assessment involves a variety of skills that focus on letter identification, concepts about print, reading, vocabulary and hearing and recording sounds in words. Once these assessments are completed teachers immediately use the data gathered, and they begin to plan for targeted reading lessons, small group clinics and needed teaching points for individual students.

Record of Oral Language (ROL)

Foundation, Year 1 & Year 2

ROL helps teachers to observe and understand changes in young children’s language development. Awareness of these changes allows teachers to develop more powerful language programs with the goal of supporting each learner to master the structural knowledge of the English language.
