From the Executive

Welcome new staff members!

One of the most enjoyable aspects of the role of the Dean of Staff is the implementation of the Staff Induction program. This program aims to familiarise staff with the policies and procedures of the College and the charism of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.  In 2022, we welcome 22 new staff members including teachers, learning support officers, youth ministers, tutors, a psychologist and not to mention, a new Principal. With a total staff number of 212, this effectively represents 10% of our current staff.

In addition to the Induction Program, each new staff member is assigned a ‘Welcome Mentor’ to ensure their smooth transition to the College.  Over the years, our existing staff members have generously volunteered their time and expertise to provide invaluable support as mentors. Such guidance assists new staff in their transition to Mazenod College and is conducive to their positive wellbeing.

As a further means of formally welcoming staff, each week we will feature a new staff member here in the College newsletter. We hope you enjoy reading about their previous experiences and personal interests. This week we introduce our Mathematics teacher, Mrs Wajiha Tariq, who is currently being mentored by Ms Divya Shangari, Coordinator of Mathematics (10-12). Please make her feel welcome.

Year 10 Homeroom Teacher and Teacher of Mathematics Years 8-11

Having survived COVID 19 and my Masters of Teaching Degree in Primary and Secondary Teaching, with Mathematics as my main method, I am happy to be Mrs. Tariq of the Mazenod Family!

Before joining Mazenod College this year I was teaching as a Secondary Mathematics teacher at Melbourne Girls Grammar School. I have a post graduate degree in Mathematics and have taught in diverse and multi-cultural environments in different countries for over 10 years.

As a teacher, I like to focus on enhancing the metacognitive skills of students that are necessary for the positive learning environment of my classroom. I have been personally enriched and have learned a great deal by working with people from various origins, cultures, and requirements. It has enabled me to cater to individual learning needs of my students. I reflect constantly on my own practice and work with others to broaden my abilities and interests.

Outside school, I love to travel and explore new places and experience different foods. I am lucky to have had the opportunity to visit my family this summer in Canada, so Toronto is like a second home for me.

I attempt to establish strong contacts and connections with my students and their families to work together as a single entity towards the progression of life- long positive learning. So, feel free to reach out and I would love to help you in every possible way!

Mrs. Tariq
