Netball

Attached to this week’s newsletter is the draw for this weekend and a ‘how to’ guide for the new payment and registration portal for netball.  I found the website so much easier to use than the app, so you might want to set it up that way.  You can pay for more than one child at the one time, which might make it easier for parents.  You can also add your clubs for the winter seasons now for most leagues.  Registration and payment must happen by week 2 of the season.  There will also be a sheet of paper to collect from coaches to fill out and return please (indemnity).

Fees for this term reflect the HNA fee and the VNA fee ($60). The VNA fee is only paid once for the entire calendar year. Playing club netball, or at least Term 1 and 4 school netball, helps to make this cost better value for money.

There are quite a few people already away this weekend, so I do ask that anyone who is going to be away to try really hard to get a fill-in for the week and make sure that they let their coach know well ahead of time, as we unfortunately don’t have an abundance of players this season.

Best wishes for the games this weekend to all players.

Cricket

The 21/22 cricket season is in full swing again as we head into the last few rounds of the regular season. With COVID isolation a constant threat to the coaching staff and players, squad depth may prove to be vital in these final stages.

The annual First XI match against Monivae has been scheduled for 27 February. Monivae are hosting the event this year and the 40-over game will start at 10:00 am.

College Blue vs Casterton District Cricket Club

College Blue battled it out against Casterton on a wicket that proved to be conducive to bowling. The College batters struggled to get their eyes in and most of the top- and middle order failed to make double figures. Notable exceptions to this were Cooper Edmonds, who made a tough 46 off 114 balls, and George Austin with a quicker 21 off 29 balls. The lower order and tail contributed nicely to the total of 168 after 40.5 overs, with Jake Tonissen, Tom O’Sullivan and Luca Wagner all reaching double figures. The College bowlers proved a difficult challenge for Casterton as they were bowled out for 77 runs. The wickets were shared amongst the bowling attack as Henry Bensch, Jock Barrie, Tom Heazlewood and Luca Wagner all chipped in with 2 wickets. The balance of the wickets were two run outs by Jake Tonissen and Tom O’Sullivan.

College Gold vs Hamilton Cricket Club

In a match that showed just how quickly things can change on a cricket field, College Gold batted first against Hamilton Cricket Club. The College top order had a solid start, with Jack Austin (25*) Eli Hunter (50*) and Jack Wortley (52*) providing an excellent foundation from which to build. Unfortunately, after the two half-centurions were followed by a batting collapse after they retired, with the rest of the College batters only managing 5 runs between them on the way to a total of 143. The College bowling attack did a great job of keeping it a contest up to the end with good contributions from all the bowlers. Jack Wortley (17 runs off 8 overs) and George Pern (11 runs off 5 overs, with 1 wicket) helped keep the scoring in check, with wickets being shared fairly evenly amongst the bowlers. Hamilton reached the total in the 48th over.

St Andrew's vs College Gold

College Gold won the toss and decided to bowl first on Day 1. After a solid second wicket partnership for St Andrew's the College Gold bowlers did a fine job of restricting the batters to 7/176 by the end of the day’s play. Scoreboard pressure was brilliantly maintained by some fine economical bowling, including the following standout figures: Harry Austin’s 3 runs off 3 overs; Will Bourke’s 8 runs off 4 overs, including 1 wicket; and Tom Templeton’s 7 runs off 5 overs. The main damage came from George Nicholls’ 3/18 and Jude Alexander’s 2/12. There are still 2 overs to bowl on Day 2 before the College batters have a crack at the total.

College Blue vs Tahara

College Blue were sent in to bat by Tahara on a pitch that proved to give good aid to the bowlers. Our batters struggled to keep good partnerships going amid disciplined bowling from Tahara. William Mackellar was the only batter to reach double figures, standing tall to score an unbeaten 50 off 68 balls. Defending a total of 105, James Heazlewood took the only wicket on the day to leave Tahara on 1/64 by the end of the day’s play.

College Gold vs St Andrews Blue

A slightly depleted College Gold faced a strong St Andrews Blue team on Wednesday. Some good performances with the bat came from Ned Hintum (16 runs) and Fergus Giles (12 runs), though the most runs were scored through extras (51). With only eight players available for the match College faced an uphill battle in the field as the runs came quickly for St Andrew’s at the start of the innings. The College bowlers managed to reign it in well after the initial onslaught, with some economical bowling from Ned Hintum and Sophie Satchell, who both managed to bowl at less than 4 per over. Sam Mecham chipped in with 2 wickets.

College Blue vs Tarrington Black

College Blue faced a Tarrington team that had a mix of new and experienced players and chose to bowl first. After some initial quick wickets they were met with some resistance in the middle overs. Tom Templeton was the most economical bowler, with only 2 runs coming off his 3 overs, which also included a wicket. George Nicholls and George Edgar both had 5 runs coming off their 3 overs, with Nicholls taking 2 wickets and Edgar taking 1. Harry Manley was the other wicket taker for the team. The top performers with the bat were Jack Mann (39*), Tom Templeton (36*), Will Templeton (30*) and Charlie Hindhaugh (26*).
