100 STORY BUILDING POETRY INCURSION
STUDENT REFLECTION
On the 9th of October, our class had our first poetry incursion from the 100-story building. In the incursion, we learnt about using poetry as a form of writing whilst exploring different types of poetry so we could write our own poems about the topic of waterways. We completed six activities to collect ideas about waterways and different forms of bodies of water. The activities we did were all about summarising our thoughts by using imagery and emotions. In one particular activity, we had to put ourselves in the position of a body of water of our choosing and write about what they would feel, whether it be positive or negative. In another activity, we listened to many different sounds of water and wrote down quick dot points on what we imagined. After our incursion we had a period in English to write a flow poem about a waterway, which was sent to the 100-story Building to be used anonymously as part of the Footscray poetry festival. The incursion was very enjoyable, insightful and allowed us to use our own individual creativity, which was amazing.

YEAR 7 FLOW POETRY PROJECT
As part of a unit studying poetry, Year 7 students participated in a collaborative project with 100 Story Building based on a celebration of the waterways of Melbourne’s West, and humanity’s connection with water.
The Year 7’s worked with 100 Story Building in two sessions. The first involved brainstorming and creating various forms of poetry ranging from haikus to soundscape inspired poems. The second involved creating projector slides by mixing their poetry with various inks. Several students also contributed audio recitations of their poetry. The result was a series of slides and recordings which will be part of an installation at the Due West Festival held at the Footscray Community Arts Centre in November.
Special thanks to Daniel Micallef in the library and Sue Hansen in the arts faculty for helping out and allowing us to take over the library and art rooms during the sessions.
