Performing Arts News

What has been happening in our World?

As the performing arts world mourns the death of the late, great Doris Day, we at Patterson River are encouraging and supporting the next generation of budding legends. Some will be drawn to the silver screen, others to the bright lights of Broadway! Our program at Patterson River is sure to help them on their way.

As always, we have all been very busy! We always appreciate and value the extra time that performing arts students put in to make this program so great!

Choir

On Thursday 4th April, the Choir along with Ms. Molloy and Mr. Mitchelmore sang their way to the annual secondary school “Singfest” gathering. They travelled to Kambrya Secondary College in Berwick and joined approximately 250 other enthusiastic singers. Students who attended on the day delighted in the opportunity to sing their hearts out and learn from the visiting clinicians. They also enjoyed teasing Mr. Mitchelmore with constant singing as he drove the school bus! So much fun was had.

Rising Stars

This Year 8 elective program is really taking flight! Students have been involved in student led choreography which they are really enjoying! Year 8 student, Amelia Godino, found her experience with leading a group of her peers to be a fantastic opportunity to perform and to be involved in something she loves. She cannot wait for their next performance!

Drama

At Year 7, Drama students are working on bringing puppets to life through the devices of narrative structure. Students are working on the exposition stage: introducing characters and backstories. What a lot of fun!

The students in Year 9 Scripted Production have been involved in the Drama Victoria Drama Festival this term and are currently working hard on a self-devised ensemble performance that will be presented next Wednesday the 5th of June at East Cranbourne Secondary College. The Festival involves students from 25 schools across Victoria who attended an excursion to Melbourne University where the young performers learnt skills in creating drama and the festival stimulus was revealed. When back at school, students created an ensemble performance based on the stimulus – a performance artwork by Robyne Latham ‘Remembering the Empty Coolomans’, which is dedicated to the stolen generation. Both year 9 classes should be congratulated on their professionalism and dedication.

Due to popular demand, Drama Night is coming back to Patterson River on Wednesday the 19th of June at 7pm. An intimate performance showcasing class work and the creativity and passion of Drama Club, who meet on Fridays at Lunch. The night will be a celebration of theatrical performance, entertaining, moving and funny. Tickets will be available soon, don’t miss out.

Music News

Music students from the College Stage Band were proud to perform at the Annual School Anzac Day Service on April 24th at the Seaford RSL. This annual event brings together more than a dozen primary schools from the local area as well as ex-servicemen and women and local members of Parliament to pay their respects to the sacrifices made during World War One. Our students provided the pre-service entertainment as well as accompaniment for the Australian and New Zealand national anthems, alongside Kananook Primary School. Fortunately, the rain held back and the service was able to proceed without incident.

Music students from the Senior Band were fortunate to attend an open rehearsal by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra on April 26th at Hamer Hall in Melbourne. The MSO was rehearsing for their upcoming performance of Ghostbusters, in which they provided live accompaniment to the 1984 movie. Students were able to gain valuable insight from conductor Benjamin Northey on how the orchestra works with playing alongside the movie, this included identifying cue types and signals given by the conductor as the movie plays.

Mr Steve Mitchelmore

It was fantastic to see the hard work and talent of our Year 8 Concert Band as they held their first Open Rehearsal for their families and friends.

It provided band members the valuable experience of performing in a friendly and supportive environment. The band performed a variety of pieces displaying their amazing talents. Lead by the Band Leaders, students spoke about rehearsal techniques and the pieces they are working on.

Year 8 most memorable performance moments:

“Playing the two Queen songs”

“I liked all of it, it was fun”

My drum solo in Beethoven’s 9th”

When everyone played the pieces in time”

“When I spoke to the audience”

“When we bowed”

Dance Night

Dance Night was a huge success on Tuesday the 28th of May. Students showcased their own choreography and learnt dance works showing off creativity, technical skill and performance artistry. Along with the Year 10 and 11 dance classes, the performers were made up of the PRSC aerobics group, who are competing in the state competition this weekend, some of the dancers from Yr 8 Rising Stars and Dance Extension, a student led initiative for the junior school run by member of the senior dance class on Thursdays at lunchtime. We are very much looking forward to an equally spectacular Dance Night at the end of Semester Two.
