Year 9 Students Selecting Their 2018 Subjects

Our Year 9 students met earlier this week to discuss their subject selection for Year 10 and beyond. We discussed that it is perfectly fine and understandable not to know what you want to do beyond school, but it is not OK to do nothing about this. So we highlighted all of the things that a Year 9 can do to explore their interests and what they might be suited to – career wise. These included:

  • Participating in the various Career events offered throughout the year e.g. ICT day at SHS on Oct. 31st (these are advertised regularly on the Daily Bulleting read out in morning roll call).
  • Logging on to their student secure area within www.wanganuiparkcareers.com and completing the online ‘Interests test’.
  • Reflecting on (and researching) the 400+ careers that their ‘Interest Test’ results suggest.
  • Using the links on the careers website to explore the kind of training and education necessary to make those careers of interest a possibility. Will it require a University degree? Will it involve on the job training? Will it require me to be successful in gaining an apprenticeship? Will I be able to do vocational training in a TAFE to access these careers? Will these training options require me to meet pre-requisites?
  • Based on my research, what subjects will I need to complete successfully in Year 10? What subjects should I be choosing in my VMG?
  • Who they can go to for advice with subject selections: subject teachers, house leader, Mr Bristol (VCE/VCAL Co-ord.), Mr Crosbie (Careers adviser)

Then the students are to go onto their secure area within the Careers website and complete their ‘Career Action Plan’, including the information they’ve found. On Thursday 14th September in Home Group they will receive their subject selection sheets. They have been advised to discuss this with their teachers and then bring it to their Parent Teacher Interviews on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd September.

Year 9 Subject Submission Day – Thursday 12th October

As part of the new approach being adopted for students selecting subjects to go into Year 10, we are holding a ‘Subject Submission’ day at the school on Thursday 12th October. Parents and their Year 9 will attend a 15 min appointment to review the choices they have made in light of what career possibilities they might be seeking. Appointments can be made through the main office on 5820 9900. They are available between 10 am – 1 pm and 3 pm – 6 pm. Students must attend these with their completed (signed by all teachers) subject selection sheet and a printed copy of their completed Career Action Plan. This day is a student free day for Year 9’s only.

Year 10 Student Course Submission Day

Congratulations to all parents and students who participated in this day last month. It was a resounding success. 96% of all Year 10’s attended a counselling session with a parent and submitted their course. Feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive, thank you! In light of this we are attempting a similar approach with Year 9’s as you will have noted elsewhere in this Newslink.

Some students who have selected a VETis subject have still not forwarded their USI number to TAFE, they can do so through Mr Crosbie. Students applying for VETis Health are reminded they must submit an online application by the deadline they were provided or they cannot be considered for this course.

Year 11 Math Science Awards Opportunity

Infrastructure Network– Goulburn Valley are proud to present the 2017 Math/ Science Awards. The awards aim to recognise the achievements of high performing students within the Goulburn Valley Region in the fields of Math and Science. The awards are sponsored by local organisations and individuals who share a passion for the development of local math and science students. Prizes include Book Vouchers to the value of $250. The award recipients will also be invited to attend presentation Ceremony, during which students receive their awards and have an opportunity to meet leaders from within the local industry. Applications are open to current Year 11 students. Submissions should be made to Mr Graeme Crosbie by Thursday 21st September who will then forward applications to INGV.  Please carefully read the requirements in the attached pdf file.

Year 12’s Intending On Taking A Gap Year

If your Year 12 has decided to take a Gap Year they may be interested in applying for traineeship positions, these involve 12 months of employment while gaining a formal qualification. Wanganui Park Secondary College employs a number of former students in traineeship roles. Recently we met with the students, explained the roles and interested students have submitted applications for these. Appointments are likely to be made in the coming weeks.

Each of the Group Training companies locally offer traineeships as a form of employment, so Year 12’s are encouraged to approach each individually and arrange a suitable time to meet with them and submit their resume. Often these roles are in Office Administration, Education Support, Retail and other non-trade areas.

The Apprenticeship Factory is one Group Training organisation who employ a number of Gap Year trainees across numerous schools and businesses. They are running information sessions for interested students. Details of dates and how to book are listed in the ‘coming events’ section above. An information sheet from The Apprenticeship Factory is attached to this article as a pdf file that can be downloaded.

Interested In Engineering? (Years 10, 11 & 12)

Year 10, 11 and 12 students are invited to discover what the "E" in STEM is really all about.  In partnership with LEAP into Engineering, La Trobe University and Defence Force Recruiting, The Engineering Link Group presents the LEAP Engineering Link Project.
An Engineering Link Project follows the design-make-evaluate process of problem solving.  In small groups, students will work with professional engineers to solve a problem in two different, day-long projects.  Participants will test materials, consider their options, complete calculations and present their solutions to the engineer.  Each group's solution will tested to ensure it meets the criteria.

Students can choose activities from a variety of disciplines, including civil, mechanical, aeronautical, electrical and robotics engineering.

La Trobe University is a proud host of this event, and students attending will receive exclusive access to their state-of-the-art facilities and resources.  The opportunity to experience what university life is really like is one that every student, whether considering La Trobe University or not, should not miss!

  • When:  27 & 28 September 2017 (during Spring Holiday break)
  • Where:  La Trobe University, Bundoora Campus, Melbourne, Vic
  • Cost:  $66 (includes project registration and lunches)

Year 12s Applying Through VTAC

Over the past fortnight we have been looking, in our meetings during RAPS, at applying for special consideration (SEAS) and scholarships. Both of these processes require students to have:

  1. Registered online at www.vtac.edu.au
  2. Submitted a preliminary Course Application. They will be able to change and re-order preferences as often as they wish (outside of very short periods of time when the system shuts down for maintenance).
  3. Commence their SEAS, the Special Entry Access Scheme that takes into account factors that may have impacted on a student’s education. All Wanganui Park students should apply for Category 1 (which includes rural and regional factors) by ticking that box. If there are medical, financial or other areas of disadvantage students may need a ‘responsible’ person who is aware of those circumstances to write a statement of support. Depending on the kind of disadvantage experienced this may be a medical specialist/doctor/psychologist, House Leader or Wellbeing staff member. If unclear they should consult their House Leader.
  4. Commence their Scholarship application, within their VTAC portal. Depending on the circumstances stated in the application there may be a need for ‘statements of support’ that could be the same people/statement provided in their SEAS application.

Career Action Plans. Is yours complete?

All Year 10-12’s are reminded that they must have completed their Career Action Plans in their student secure area of the Wanganui Park Careers website (www.wanganuiparkcareers.com). Year 10’s will be bringing their printed copy of the CAP to their Course Submission Day appointment. Year 11’s need to have theirs complete before they can submit their preferences for 2018.
