YEAR 12 BUSINESS MANAGEMENT CUB EXCURSION

On Monday 27 May our class went to the Carlton United Breweries (CUB) for our Business Management excursion, our area of study was about operations management.

We were planning to observe the production processes, studied raw materials managements, as well as what strategies the business utilises in the purpose of minimising wastage. The manager’s name was James and he demonstrated all the inputs required in the production process, including different types of malts, hops and the worts etc. James told us that they would forecast the quantity of beer that needs to be made by reviewing their sales figures in previous years, especially those events and festivals. For example, the Grand Final of AFL is the highest beer consumption day so that the business will be quite busy beforehand. They will then order their inputs with sufficient delivery time to ensure that the most suitable amount of beers are going to be produced. They will import some hops from Germany and Belgium, as they are crucial in producing special flavours of beers.

The business also tries their best to minimize wastage by drying the redundant hops and send them to the farms to feed the cows. The most exciting part for our class was to look at thousands of beers on the conveyor, all different branded beers are going to be separately checked to ensure that the products reach predetermined quality and quantity. The unqualified products will be sent to another conveyor for recycling purposes. The production speed was shocking, a labeling machine could label 580 bottles of beer in a minute! A rinsing machine was also able to clean 900 bottles of beers per minute. All the qualified products will then wait to be packaged as they all gather at an exit. It was an amazing visual satisfaction for me and my fellows.

I strongly recommend students attending this excursion as we could learn our business contents from real life experiences, I find that it becomes much more easier for me to provide examples when I do my practice exam questions as I have seen the production processes myself.

MEDIEVAL DAY

On Monday 21 May, half of the Year 8 classes dressed up in their fanciest, medieval wear. From princesses to knights in shining armour, everyone looked absolutely fantastic. We started the day off doing an activity in our survivor groups.

Each group had an assigned activity. For our group, we were filming a news report. We had the chance to work on our activities for the first two periods, which would then be presented in periods 3 and 4. The different tasks assigned were News Report, Shield, Skit, Table Decoration and Trivia. Every class had a specific theme that they had to reenact. For our class, we decided upon the Black Plague. Some other themes included Religion, Vikings and The Feudal System.

After completing the activity, we came together in the hall for a ‘feast’. We each bought something to share and the chicken was provided by the teachers and organisers. Before we ate the feast, we watched each class perform their skit and show off their shield. The skit by 8J included a dance to a Michael Jackson song and the 8F skit was very dramatic and expressive. All of the skits were funny, clever and informative.

To finish off an amazing day, we sat down in the hall and watched a movie called A Knight’s Tale. This movie was about a young man who competed in Jousting tournaments. Even though we did not end up completing the movie, I think we all enjoyed what we got to see.

Overall, Medieval Day was absolutely incredible and it will definitely be one of our highlights for 2019. Thank you to the many staff who helped make this day possible.
