Southern Independent Schools Art, Design and Technology Exhibition Celebration Evening 2022

On Monday, 7 November the SIS Art, Design and Technology Exhibition Celebration Evening was launched at Cube 37 in Frankston. This exhibition is a celebration of student work across the Visual Arts, Design and Technology subjects throughout all year levels. Various SIS schools entered student work in the exhibition, including St. Peter’s Cranbourne and Clyde North campuses, Balcombe Grammar, Flinders Christian College and John Paul College to name a few.

The last two years has seen the exhibition take place virtually so it was great to return to the exhibition space and experience first hand the works presented in a professional gallery. The standard of the works was exceptional and the event was very well attended.

Guest speaker Cassie Stevens (Illustrator & Designer – Past Padua College Student) provided insight into her career and what that looks like as a working artist. She inspired the students present that by working hard at school and using your teachers as guidance you can follow your artistic passions into University.

Only 36 works per campus are selected for this event, so it is indeed a privilege for those students to have work exhibited. We extend our congratulations to them and celebrate their success.

"From the College Archives"

Fifteen years ago, that is, 2007, negotiations took place to initiate the purchase of land at Clyde North to accommodate a new campus of St. Peter’s College. The site was also chosen with a new primary school and a new parish in mind. As a result, in 2022, the site accommodates St. Peter’s College, Clyde North Campus and is adjacent to St, Thomas the Apostle Primary School and the almost completed St. Thomas the Apostle Church which will serve the community of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Clyde North.

In that same year, at St. Peter’s College Cranbourne, students Daniel Butt, Daniel Heskins, Michelle Molinari, and Liana Shankie designed and created the 'Onomichi' sculpture under the guidance of teacher, Sarah Jane Chase. It is situated along ‘The Avenue,’ which is a gift of the Parents and Friends. ‘The Avenue’ was opened in 2005.

The sculpture represents the friendship, and connection that exists between St. Peter’s College and Onomichi High School. Several student exchanges have taken place between the two schools.

Onomichi is a city in the Prefecture of Hiroshima, Japan. As such, the area was devastated in August 1945 when the first atomic bomb was dropped. To commemorate this, several ‘Peace Cranes’ are prominent features of the sculpture. They reflect the devastation of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and a desire for peace. Hope and serenity are also expressed in the form of the globe that is the centre peace of the sculpture.

When the World Youth Day Cross and Icon visited St. Peter’s College in 2008, the college community gathered around ‘The Avenue’. Thus, the WYD Cross, Icon and the Onomichi sculpture provided several focus points for prayer and reflection.

The St. Peter’s College community is grateful for the many structures on the grounds of both campuses of the college that allow students and staff to reflect on the past and how, by working together, we can make the world a better place.

WORLD YOUTH DAY- 2023

For more than 30 years, World Youth Day has been an opportunity for the young people of the world to go on pilgrimage and discover how Jesus calls each of us to be his disciples. World Youth Day 2023 will be held in Lisbon, Portugal in the month of August. The major events of World Youth Day include Papal welcome, catechesis, youth festivals, as well as the final pilgrim walk and vigil with Pope Francis and millions of other young Catholics. The Diocese of Sale is organising groups of young people between the ages of 16-35 to join with the archdiocese of Melbourne for pilgrimage. If you are interested, and want to know more about the pilgrimage, there will be an information night held at St. Agatha’s Parish Hall, Cranbourne (129 Sladen Street) on 12 December at 7pm. You can also contact Fr. Avinash George for information on avinash.george@cdsale.org.au or 03 59971510.
