Around the Classrooms

Year 1 and 2

Each day last week, the students wrote a paragraph about the different systems in our body. These included the skeletal system, muscular system, digestive system and circulatory system. Students used paragraphs, topic sentences and supporting details to improve their writing. After they finished their writing, students used editing to make any changes with punctuation, spelling and sentence structure. It was great to see how confident the students were to challenge themselves and write complex sentences about the human body systems. Keep up the good work 1/2 ‘s!

In numeracy this week the students have been looking at numbers and using two parts to make a whole. Students use part-part-whole to work out addition and whole-par- part to work out subtraction. It was great to see students revisit how to make and name numbers in maths. Well done 1/2’s!

Design Technology

This term, the Junior and Senior School Classes have been working together on a special project that both helps our school environment and works on collaboration with different year groups. This project is designing and then building insect hotels! The students have followed the design process of planning, sketching and now building. Through altered design and technical aspects, the students were able to create a design that was both bug and child friendly! The students have learnt and practised the skills of hammering and drilling as well as teamwork, resilience (after some thumbs have been on the wrong side of the hammer!) and cooperation. We have been lucky enough to have the Bannockburn Men’s Shed group come and teach their skills of building. A huge thank you to Geoff, Gus, Diane and Helmut for their expertise and skills in woodwork! The upcoming weeks will be finishing off the finer details inside. Stay tuned for updates!

Year 4, 5 and 6

Literacy:

The Grade 4/5/6 students have been learning about Early Russia, it’s previous leaders and the geography of the country in their literacy lessons. The students conducted a KWL (Know, Wonder, Learn) at the beginning of the unit and it was great to see the prior knowledge that already exists. The students are also learning how to condense information into notes by using note taking symbols to identify key information and document it in a more time effective way. See some examples below.

Numeracy: In Maths, the Senior Students have been learning about probability and how to link this with fractions, decimals, and percentages. They have been investigating different probability experiments using materials such as dice, play money and playing cards, then converting these probabilities into fractions, decimals, and percentages. The students have also had a focus on the language when reading decimals, e/g tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. Please see some examples of classroom work below.
