Challenges...

I would like to extend my gratitude to all parents and families for your continued support as we navigate, as best we can, the unavoidable challenges all schools are facing due to illness in the community.  One thing I do know for sure, is that the children here at Monty PS, continue to demonstrate qualities of flexibility, resilience, and good humour. This ability to adapt is so reassuring of future character strength, and assists the whole school community to stay strong; particularly staff and other students, when changes inevitably occur to daily timetables and staffing.

With many across the state succumbing to the plethora of illness in the community, there are occasions where it is unavoidable that our Monty children may have unfamiliar teachers for the day, or even week. However, I am so grateful for the positive, optimistic and graceful responses that our children demonstrate in these circumstances. As always, we strive to maintain the best possible environment, where we can keep the children learning and feeling a strong sense of connection to the school. And our children appear to be doing so much more than just managing - they are thriving! Every day I see evidence of this in the classrooms, teachers' anecdotes and in the school yard.

As we move into the last weeks of term, and the beginning of winter, I am sure that our challenges are not over - but I am heartened by and (not just a little bit) proud of the positivity and perseverance I have witnessed in our children thus far, and so feel very optimistic that regardless of any upcoming adversity, the community of MPS will continue to flourish, and that at some stage, "this too shall pass".

Education Week: 150 Years of Public Education

Education Week celebrates the strengths and achievements of Victoria's government education sector.

This year's theme is 150 Years of Public Education, to coincide with this milestone anniversary for Victoria.

Education Week 2022 is an opportunity for all primary and secondary schools, higher education providers, and early childhood education and care services to commemorate the past, celebrate the present and imagine the future of education in Victoria.

To mark this occasion, we have put together some videos that showcase the learning of our current students in Spelling, Maths and Social and Personal Wellbeing.

Update on School Fees

State schools are, in theory, ‘free’, yet the government only funds the bare minimum in terms of buildings, staffing and maintenance.

Recent changes mean that the Victorian Government does not allow schools to invoice parents directly for compulsory fees; rather, they are only allowed to ‘ask’ parents for a voluntary contribution.

Within our school this voluntary support has allowed us to, for example:

  • employ a school nurse
  • increase our technology infrastructure
  • upgrade classroom heating and cooling systems
  • build our bank of school devices
  • provide evidence-based support and wellbeing programs
  • subscribe to online learning and assessment sources
  • provide a wide range of curriculum experiences such as SAKG
  • provide intervention/extension/enhancement small groups
  • provide classroom and specialist consumables and subsidise printing costs

These initiatives are all funded by the payments parents make towards fees. In order for us at Montmorency Primary to be able to continue to deliver the diversity of programs that we are accustomed to and to ensure maximum impact and benefit to all children, we rely on this additional funding from fees.

We are very grateful to those parents/carers who have paid fees this year so far. Fees are issued in January of each year as predictability of income assists the school immeasurably in planning and resourcing. However, if you have yet to contribute towards your fees, we ask that you give strong consideration to paying the voluntary financial contributions (in full or part) because, without a strong response, what the school can do to enhance your child’s education may be restricted.

Thank you so much for your assistance in ensuring that the education at Montmorency Primary is as diverse and as stimulating as it can possibly be.

Take care everyone,

Janene and Bek
