VICTORIA INTERSCHOOL CHESS STATE FINAL

On Monday 10 October, the McKinnon chess team consisting of Steve Le Year 10, Tim Nicolaides Year 10, Aryan Jayanty Year 11, Gregory Wen Year 11, Peter Nguyen Year 11, Jonathan Kui Year 10, Rowan Shahar Year 12 and Howie Nguyen Year 9 traveled to Brighton Grammar School to compete in the Chess Victoria Interschool Secondary Open State Final. This year, there were 29 finalist schools and over 230 players qualified from all around Victoria.

It was a long and grueling day where each player must remain focused for over a period of 6 hours, playing a total of 8 games with the 15 minutes per player time control. The McKinnon team performed admirably with a total of 32 wins and 8 draws. This gave the team a total of 25 points on the day and 10th overall in the school standings.

 

There were also some brilliant individual performances from Rowan Shahar Year 12 (6 wins), Steve Le Year 10 (5 wins) and Tim Nicolaides Year10 (4 wins & 2 draws).

 

The full individual results were as follows:

  • Steve Le (5 pts, 41st overall)
  • Tim Nicolaides (5 pts, 45th overall)
  • Aryan Jayanty (4.5 pts, 77th overall)
  • Jonathan Kui (4.5 pts, 84th overall)
  • Peter Nguyen (4 pts, 112th overall)
  • Gregory Wen (3.5 pts, 140th overall)
  • Howie Nguyen (3.5 pts, 154th overall)

Note: Individual total point is out of 8 and ranking is out of 234.

 

This was a fantastic effort and result for the McKinnon chess team who is competing for the first time at the state level.

MCK CHESS PLAYER TITLES

Congratulations to Steve Le (McK rating: 1352) and Rowan Shahar (McK rating: 1175) whose performance at the interschool state final have earned them new McK chess titles (and badges): Steve Le has been awarded the prestigious Queen Class Player (QN) title while Rowan Shahar has been awarded the Bishop Class Player (BP) title.
