YEAR 10 COMMERCE MOCK COURTROOM PLEA HEARING

From Wednesday 5 October - Monday 10 October, Year 10 commerce classes went to the Old Magistrates’ Court to learn about the legal processes of the Victorian justice system. The Old Magistrates’ Court sits on the site of the original Supreme Court of Victoria, which interestingly, held the Ned Kelly trials in 1880, and is where the infamous ranger was sentenced to death by Judge Redmond Barry.

The Magistrate’s Court is presided over by a Magistrate that holds minor civil and criminal jurisdiction. The Court was the perfect setting to act out the plea hearing on Sexting, where the Year 10 Commerce students were assigned roles with scripts and were instructed to act out these roles in the replica court. Students participated in roles such as the judge, the accused, court clerk, attorneys, the audience and more. This gave us an incredible insight into the legal system.

Ultimately, the experience was extremely rewarding and informative. Not only did we dive into a priceless life lesson about criminal offenses, consequences and court proceedings, but we also enjoyed the unforgettable experience.

MCKINNON SECONDARY COLLEGE VISITS METRO TUNNEL HQ

At the end of Term 3, the Cities of the Future elective class went to the Metro Tunnel Headquarters, located in Melbourne’s CBD. The Metro Tunnel is building new stations in places where there are not any stations yet. It is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Australia and the biggest ever in Victoria. We learnt about how the Metro tunnel is being constructed and all the different materials and resources that help to build the Metro tunnel. We uncovered all the rare equipment that building these tunnels requires and how they are used.

Whilst we were there, we also discussed all the different types of jobs a project like this needs. We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to explore different career pathways in the industry and discovered the endless amount of jobs a project like this needs, including some you would never even think of!

At the end of the session we explored the city and had fun being independent and seeing all the amazing infrastructure the city has to offer.

Year 9 Students

Students from McKinnon Secondary College recently visited the city to learn more about the Metro Tunnel, Victoria’s biggest ever public transport project. The Education Program at Metro Tunnel HQ, the project’s Visitor Centre, is designed to show students what the project means to them and the wider Victorian community.

The audio-visual and augmented reality installations at the Visitor Centre helped bring the project to life.

Students learned about the challenges of creating rail infrastructure to support our expanding population and experienced the world of tunnel boring machines through virtual reality goggles. A careers discovery session explored the wide range of jobs available in large infrastructure projects and how they align with individual students’ skills and interests.
