Year Advisers Report

Years 7, 9 & 11

Year 7 have had a great start to their second term of high school. They look well rested after the Easter Break and ready to get back into learning. It looks as though new friendship groups have been formed, and as a cohort they are looking stronger than ever.

The term started off with the Swimming Carnival where Year 7 participated in many events and it was so great seeing them all dressed up in their house colours. Looks like we've got some great swimmers, and I can't wait to see how they go in the Athletics Carnival coming up later in the year.

I would like to commend the students who performed at OnTrack, it was an amazing night and the performers were outstanding.

I would also like to congratulate all of Year 7 for their amazing efforts during NAPLAN week. There were bound to be some challenges completing NAPLAN online, however they persevered through the difficulties, and by the last day they were seated quietly and logged into computers within minutes.

Overall we have had an amazing start to Term 2, well done Year 7 you make me very proud.

It has been great to see all students come back, excited for another fantastic term. The beginning of Term 2 has been very busy with multiple events including sporting, music and Naplan,  as well as many assessment tasks.

I would like to welcome our new students and their families to the school this term: Bellah Smith, Sahya Takahashi and Ryan White, they are all settling in very well.

The term started with the Swimming Carnival that had been postponed in Term 1, and although none of the results went towards regional it was great to see so many students have a go and enjoy a great day as part of the Henry Kendall High School Community. Well done to Haylie Green, Ty Creek, and Jun Heo who were all age champions.

Unfortunately the cross country had to be postponed as well, however as with the swimming carnival we are hoping to see it happen later in the year. Thank you and good luck to the students who put their name down for Zone Cross Country, it is great to see you representing our school.

Last week Year 9 completed the NAPLAN tests, it was one of firsts and lasts. The first time it was completed online but it was Year 9’s last NAPLAN test. I am very proud of them all, they were settled and respectful during all their tests and tried their personal best. Well Done!

In Week 3, the school held it’s annual OnTrack performance. It was great to see Year 9 students get up on stage and perform so brilliantly! We have many talented musicians in our year.

Coming up this term we have the Athletics Carnival and Subject Selection for their 100 hour elective for Year 10. In Week 6 I have the amazing opportunity to take ten Year 9 students on a leadership day, my only disappointment is that I could only take 10, as I know there are so many students who could step up as leaders for our school.

There have been many assessment tasks in the first few weeks as well, in preparation of teachers completing the half yearly reports. Year 9 have done extremely well in completing these and trying their best. Well Done!

It has been a busy start to Term 2 for Year 11 students. Things will not slow down throughout the term, so students are encouraged to pace themselves and allow time for recovery.

In Week 1, we were finally able to hold a swimming carnival in a traditional format. It was a great day for all! A special mention must go to the Year 11 senior house captains who had their first official event in their new role and did a great job at it.

In Week 3, many students from the Year 11 music class impressed a large audience of friends, family and staff at OnTrack at The Entertainment Grounds. It was a wonderful night which filled my heart – nothing beats seeing our students showcase their talents and shine at something, particularly when it requires facing fears and overcoming nerves to do it. So thank you to the CAPA faculty and our music students for a great experience!

These first few weeks have also consisted of students receiving results back for their first Stage 6 assessment tasks. A lot of potential has already been made evident amongst the cohort and we’re excited to see where it takes them over the next two years. For some, they may be disappointed in their results, but they should use this as a motivator instead of feeling defeated. Year 11 provides the opportunity for trial and error to develop strategies that can be turned into habits in preparation for the HSC. Many of the year group were also significantly impacted by Covid-19 at the end of last term, which might be reflected in their results.

As always, Year 11 are encouraged to see me any time if they need support or assistance.
