We were very lucky to be able to go to the Frankston Arts Centre last week to see a wonderful performance of the book 'Guess How Much I Love You'. For many students it was their very first opportunity to go to the theatre and see a live performance.

We have been reading a whole range of books to find similarities and differences.

We have been thinking about the story lines, characters and settings to see what is the same and what is different. We even looked at fiction and non-fiction books about the same topic to see what is similar about them.

During writing we have been working on making our writing more exciting by using lots of adjectives. We have also used videos and pictures to help us plan our own story ideas.

Mathematics

We are learning lots of ways to add numbers to find totals and have been thinking about which are the most useful in different situations, and which tools can help us too -

fingers, concrete materials like counters, unifix blocks, or counting sticks, number lines, counting charts, dice, dominos, cards, etc.

Some of the strategies we have practised so far include;

counting on - starting from the larger number - 14 + 3 = 17
partitioning numbers - breaking numbers into parts and finding all their number bonds - 7 can be made from 7 + 0, 6 + 1, 5 + 2, 4 + 3, - can you find the rest?
friends of 10 - 8 + 2 = 10
doubles - 2 + 2 = 4, 7 + 7 = 14
and near doubles - if I know double 3 is 3 + 3 then 3 + 4 would be double 3 plus 1 more

Education in Faith and Inquiry

During Education in Faith lessons, we have listened to books and watched videos that explain the story of creation. We know that what God created for us is very special and that he has given us a very important job - to look after all of creation.

As part of our Sustainability focus during Inquiry, we have been thinking about some of the practical ways that we can help our environment

by reducing the amount of water we use and the amount of rubbish we create -

and in turn doing the job God has asked of us -

to take care of all he created.
