LITERACY

The students have been working hard on improving their vocabulary in their writing. We have been focussing on 'show, don't tell' which is a skill that requires the students to incorporate their 5 senses into their writing in order to paint a vivid picture.

I have been really impressed with how the students have been taking time to select words that will have an impact on their reader.

In inquiry, we have been learning about natural disasters. Here are some examples of how students have applied that knowledge by trying to put themselves in the shoes of a firefighter who was called to assist in an Australian bushfire.

Liam: The flames burnt like the sun, unscathed by our attacks of liquid. It charged on as powerful as a demon. The nausea made it difficult to hold the hose. the fear crept up on me like a black hole sucking me in and devouring me.

Alana: As the fire got more blinding by the second, the sound was getting louder. It sounded like bombs going off non stop.

David: I was really terrified as I stood in the fires. I felt hot and sweaty. There was lots of smoke. It was flaming red and there were lots of dead, burnt leaves on the ground.

Micah: This fire was deadly. there was smoke in my eyes and I could hear screams like I was in a horror movie.

Sofia: I felt helpless like a seagull being pushed by strong winds. The fire raged in anger like I hadn't seen in days.

Molly: I felt claustrophobic and helpless. No one was there to help. I was scared of the sounds of the fire that was snapping and crackling. It sounded like thunder like a thunder storm as I was seeing the spreading of the fire blinding me.

Rosie: we helped the animals by keeping them in cages and feeding them. The confused animals didn't know what was happening. There was fire surrounding us a we were triyng to help the animals. The smoke was everywhere, it was like being trapped in a snow globe.

Emily: Everything was black, houses were burnt down, there was ash everywhere and smoke all around.

MATHS

Over the last two weeks we have been working on further developing the students understanding of decimals.

They have especially enjoyed playing games where they have been practicing visualising, ordering, comparing and understanding the size of decimals.
