Health & PE

During these uncertain times, we need to understand the importance of looking out for ourselves and focusing on the basics. This includes taking care of our own (and others) physical health but we also need to be mindful not to neglect our emotional, mental, social and spiritual dimensions of health too. Luckily for all of us, these dimensions are all inter-related and we regularly find that improving one aspect of our health has large positive influences on the other dimensions.

For example, if we eat healthy, nutrient dense foods we are more likely to feel better about ourselves, have more energy throughout the day, focus more during our work and learning, experience better sleep, have a better working memory, more likely to make better decisions and we are also more likely to influence the eating behaviours of those around us.

It is because of our understanding of these principles, that our very talented and knowledgable GSSC Health & PE staff have come together to create a variety of fitness sessions for our students, families, friends and colleagues to participate in, in the comfort of their own homes (and via social distancing).

These sessions have been designed to cater for various fitness levels, as well as providing several modifications to help make the exercises more accessible and more challenging for those who require it.

The sessions target different fitness components each week so that we are less likely to get bored and have a bit of variety in our workouts.

Some outcomes that participants could potentially experience from taking part in these workouts are:-

Increased energy levels

Increased self-esteem

Increased quality of sleep

Increased attention

Increased memory

Increased productivity (both schooling & work)

Increased motivation/accountability to exercise when completed with support from others

Increased mood

Increased Cardiovascular fitness

Increased muscle mass

Decreased body fat

... and many more

We are asking our students to complete a minimum of 3 sessions per week as a part of their core PE studies, however there will be a new workout session uploaded each day, onto Teams, so why not challenge yourself and complete all 5 each week! We would love to hear some feedback from those who have completed some of the sessions, and we would also love for you to encourage your family and friends to take part too so make sure you push them to give it a go!

We thank Daryl McConnell for his ongoing support with editing and filming of the exercise classes!
