Key Dates for Mid Year Reporting Process

Student Midyear Reports

As always, you will receive a report for your child outlining their progress in Semester 1, 2020. However, the report will look different as it is not possible to implement our standard report writing process.

We have received advice from the Department of Education and Training regarding modifications to the Semester One reporting that takes into account the limitations on the ability of teachers to accurately assess student progress during the remote learning period.

As a result of this advice, teachers at Buninyong Primary School will:

-          not be providing a 5 point scale for curriculum areas (i.e. A to E)

-          be available for parents/carers and students to discuss the school report,         although we would appreciate it if these were limited to occasions where  parents/carers have concerns that they feel need to be addressed immediately. Other opportunities for feedback will arise in Term 3, 2020.

The report on student achievement will be limited to

-          a curriculum statement from the classroom teacher of the areas of the Victorian Curriculum F-10 taught

-          a comment on how the student has adjusted to the remote and flexible learning

environment, with reference to the Personal and Social Capability curriculum.

-          a series of judgements based on the personal and social capabilities your child has   demonstrated.

-          a curriculum statement from each specialist area outlining the areas covered.

The end of Semester 2 report will have a more informed and accurate assessment of your child’s progress against the Victorian Curriculum.

The midyear student reports will be made available in your Compass portal from 4pm Friday June 12.

Understanding the Mid Year Report

Included in the midyear report are a series of learning behaviours, which teachers have made a judgement against for each student.

The table below will help when it comes to understanding the ratings your child has received. We acknowledge that this period of remote learning has provided many challenges for students and their families and that these judgements are simply based on what has been observed.

For each of the following statements, students have been provided a judgement using the scale in the table below. The table will assist in understanding what each means.

Behaviour:

  • Remained focused during online learning conferences.
  • Used virtual conferencing tools and functions in a respectful way.
  • Acted in a responsible way during conferences and daily check-ins.

Effort:

  • Maintained a positive attitude while overcoming challenges during remote learning.
  • Responded to feedback to improve learning.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and an interest in learning.

  • Engaged with learning tasks and showed initiative.

  • Submitted learning tasks on time.
  • Attended daily check-ins.

Parent Teacher Interviews

The Parent-Teacher interviews will also look different this year as we comply with physical distancing and health and hygiene protocols. This semester the interviews, for those who wish to discuss the midyear reports, will be held on your teacher’s Webex Meeting Room. The following organisation will help the virtual interviews run smoothly:

  • Booking will open at 4pm on Tuesday June 9. Bookings can be made on your Compass portal.
  • Bookings will close at 12 noon on Wednesday June 17. Any bookings after this time can be made directly with your child’s classroom teacher.
  • Your child’s teacher/s will send a message on Wednesday June 17 informing you of the Webex Meeting Room number. Your child will be able to help you with this should you have trouble.
  • Each interview will have 10 min with a 5 min break between each.

More details will be included in next week’s newsletter that will assist with making the most of these interview times.

Buninyong Short Story Writing Competition

Congratulations to Maddie W and Iris R for submitting their stories to the Buninyong Short Story Competition. Their efforts have earned them a participation certificate in the P-2 section of this competition. A certificate will be delivered to the school later this week and their names will be published in the July edition of the Buninyong Community News.

I look forward to catching up with Iris and Maddie during the broadcast on Friday.

We do have a few students who have entered from years 3-6 and these results will be published soon.

Capturing the Experiences from the Remote Learning Period

The last 10 weeks have provided us all with a very different schooling experience. Whether it be from a learning, parenting or teaching perspective, there have been plenty of celebrations and challenges thrown our way. This period of time is hopefully something we don’t want to repeat but also a period that we don’t want to forget either, so we are looking for ways to capture and document our experiences.

We are currently assembling a team of teachers and students to collect, organise and document experiences from the past 10 weeks and are looking for a couple of parents to join the team. The team would meet a couple of times over the next 4 weeks and potentially into Term 3.

The Old Cyprus Tree

During the Assembly broadcast on Friday Keila N was awarded with her special t-shirt for guessing the correct age (to the best of our knowledge) of the old Cyprus tree which stood in our playground at the Buninyong campus.

Well done Keila.
