Steam team recommendations

Since we’re all still semi-quarantined, the STEAM leaders have put together a list of science related movies that you can watch with your friends or families and some websites/apps where you can watch them.🔭

Please check ratings before viewing to ensure they are age appropriate. Parent discretion is advised.

Contagion (2011) Rated M. Amazon Prime and coming soon to Netflix

Contagion is a thriller film about how the death of a mother and her son leads to the discovery of a deadly virus which spreads across several cities who are then put under quarantine. The film is commended for its accuracy by scientists and has received renewed popularity due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Martian (2015) Rated M. Foxtel/Amazon Prime

The Martian is about how a lone astronaut survives being stranded on Mars, it explores the finer details of various survival strategies, all backed up by science. The film offers an almost completely accurate snapshot of what life on Mars would actually be like for humans.

Minority Report (2002) Rated M. Stan/Foxtel

The Minority Report is a futuristic crime thriller set in 2054. Steven Spielberg consulted many experts to help build the science side of the film, in which the law enforcement has the ability to predict crime before it even happens. The technologies used in the film include retinal scanners and motions tracking computers which have already come to pass.

Deep Impact (1998). Rated PG. Stan/Foxtel

Deep Impact is about a star-gazing teenager who notices a killer comet hurtling towards Earth. Neil deGrasse Tyson has highlighted much of the film to be scientifically accurate.

The Andromeda Strain (1971) Rated M.

The Andromeda Strain follows a team of scientists who investigate a deadly alien organism that is unleashed on a New Mexico town. The film has been written off as unlikely to happen but alien bacteria could make it to Earth and cause disease in the right circumstances.

Apollo 13 (1995) Rated PG. Amazon prime/coming soon to Netflix

Apollo 13 is a dramatised version of the real-life Apollo 13 lunar landing which was aborted. The film feels almost like a documentary since it’s so authentic and accurate. The cast of the movie was put through intensive training, they even took a crash course in physics, to make the movie as accurate as possible.

Interstellar (2014) Rated M. Netflix/Foxtel

Interstellar is so scientifically accurate it’s being used as a teaching tool in physics classrooms. The film is heavily concerned with space travel and there are numerous published articles/ papers about the science in the film.
