LIBRARY NEWS

This Week in the Library

I can’t believe I’m writing it, but there is NO special week we’re remembering in the library this week! After 3 weeks of significant events and themes, this week we're back to reading a wide range of books and completing various activities.

Kindergarten are reading ‘Florette’ by Anna Walker who has created the most beautiful illustrations to accompany this story about moving homes and taking treasured things to new places. Whenever I’ve read this book, it leads to lots of moving stories and especially about the special things students couldn’t leave behind. To give you a glimpse at the incredible illustrations that saw it nominated for Picture Book of the Year in 2018, follow the link to the book trailer here.

Over the next two weeks, Stage One will be reading books by Australian author, Heidi McKinnon. With her first book released in 2017, the deliciously titled ‘I Just Ate My Friend’, McKinnon’s unique writing and illustrating style have had our students in stitches. Hailing from Tamworth, McKinnon has a background in graphic design which is evident in her fun illustrative style. We will also be reading the story of best-friend monsters ‘Baz & Benz’ who one day realise that their friend can be a little annoying and also ‘There’s No Such Thing’ about the tall stories Bear told when he couldn’t get to sleep. To learn more about Heidi McKinnon, you can visit her website here.

For any adult who’s ever been on a long car trip with children, the dreaded, “are we there yet?” question (or whine - well, at least in my car!) can often bring out the worst in us, but this week Stage Two will be using their best prediction skills to look for clues on the front cover of ‘Are We There Yet?’ by Alison Lester. Students will be using visual clues to predict what characters are in the story, where they’re going and what they think might happen. Take a look at the cover, what do you see?

Finally, Stage Three are putting their recent remote learning experience into practice by joining a new Library Google Classroom page and using Slides to create a digital book review. Today 5/6PW had their first lesson and I was amazed at how quick and savvy they were, they had it sorted within minutes! We will be working on these over the coming weeks and into the new term when they will be printed and made into a book recommendation resource for students in the library.

End of Term Returns

It's that time of the term again when I start to follow up overdue books and if you could please help your child look for these, that would be appreciated. Many families took the opportunity at the end of last term to borrow extra books for their children while learning remotely and not all have made it back to school. If you haven’t been able to find them, please send me an email or note so I can take this off your child’s record. My email is library@holytrinity.nsw.edu.au .

New Releases Coming Your Way

There are some great new books set to be released in the coming month and I have no doubt our students will love them.

Dharma the Llama - Matt Cosgrove (Macca’s best friend)

The World’s Worst Parents - David Walliams (move over World’s Worst Children!)

Tiny Timmy 11- Tim Cahill (if you can’t play soccer right now, read about it!)

Wolf Girl 3 - Ahn Do (is there anything this author can’t do?)

The Red Scrolls of Magic - Cassandra Clare (the newest series from the City of Bones author)

Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow - Jessica Townsend (the third instalment of the Nevermoor franchise, this is huge with our Stage 3 readers!)

CBCA Book Trailer Competition

For all our budding movie moguls, the NSW branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia is holding a Book Trailer Competition for students in Years 3-9 as part of Book Week 2020 (which has been rescheduled to Term 4). If you would like more information, visit the following link or see me in the library.

PRC Readers of the Week

Thanks to everyone who has returned their PRC Reading Log for me to verify, congratulations for completing the challenge! Don’t panic if you haven’t finished yet, there’s still plenty of time (the challenge closes at the end of August). Great job, Oliver and Ella!

Happy reading,

Mrs Toni Fraser
