Reception class : Katie

The receptions are back learning new digraphs. We have been learning how to spell these and are starting to write our own sentences.

In maths we have been learning about 2 dimensional shapes and the numbers between 20 and 50. As part of design and technology we have been learning how to draw accurate designs and have been creating models of bush huts.

This week in Geography we will start learning about the town of Uraidla. We have also been busy making Father’s Day gifts for our dads.

Year 1/2 classes : Sam and Kelly

What a successful and fabulous Book Week. So much fun reading, listening to children reading stories and working with others on a focused book.

Our classes read Winston and The Indoor Cat, What do you call Grandma? and Walk of the Whales.

They created cats and whales and wrote a letter to their grandmother.

This week's focus on Big Write reminds students of the story Jack and the Beanstalk. They have been focusing on describing the character, setting, problem and solution.

In Maths, we have started measurement. We have been looking at length using informal units, such as measuring objects using cubes, glue sticks, pencils, teddy bears etc.

In Health, we have been identifying self-regulation. We have been focusing on the Zones of Regulation. The children had to identify what they look like and how they feel when they are blue, in the green zone, yellow and red zone.

Year 3/4 class: Stephen

In Stephen’s and Henry’s Year 3/4 class the students have been learning how to build noun groups. The examples shown illustrate the process.

For maths, the students have focused on Chance and Probability, looking specifically at the language for this topic. This involved learning how to correctly use words such as certain, likely, unlikely, most likely and even.

The students also enjoyed completing a Book Week activity which allowed them to discover this year’s shortlisted books.

Year 3/4 class: Alex

In mathematics students have been building on their multiplication skills, learning efficient strategies and applying them to solve problems. Students have been applying their place value knowledge to solve group problem-solving tasks to find the mystery number given a set of clues.

In English students have been finishing off their writing pieces on country vs city life, including an engaging introduction and conclusion.

In health students have been learning about rights and responsibilities. They have been investigating the UN Convention on the Rights of A Child and creating posters to share their understanding and display the rights that stand out as being highly important to them.

Students in our class thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Book Week quiz and treasure hunt around the school. They demonstrated leadership by guiding and supporting Kelly’s Year 1/ 2 students in Kelly’s class to participate in the quiz too. They enjoyed running the Book Week assembly and participating in the parade.

Year 5/6 Class: Sallie

Our Festival Choir performance is coming up (22 September) and last Thursday we had a rehearsal at the Morphettville Racecourse with the many schools also performing on our night. It was great to be involved in such a huge production and we realised the importance of our weekly choir lessons. Don't forget to go to ticketek to order your tickets. We have been focusing on direct speech in our guided reading and explicit grammar/punctuation lessons in our literacy sessions. Such an important piece of punctuation but often really neglected when writing.

For Maths we have moved slightly away from our measurement unit of work to hone our skills in addition, subtraction and multiplication. We have been trying different strategies to work out which one we understand and can work confidently in.

Our Readers Cup teams performed their presentation pieces on Ernest Shackleton on Thursday night . Although I have written this before the event, I know they will be fabulous!!

Indonesian :Ibu Susan

For Book Week we read various stories about Indonesia or from Indonesia. The younger classes read a story about Ginger the orangutan who adopts an abandoned tiger cub who grows up and saves her from a forest fire. The older students read a traditional folktale called Timun Mas, the Golden Cucumber. This story includes a giant, magic seeds and a happy ever after!

Science and P/E: Henry

P/E

The Year 3-6 focus on soccer this term ended this week with each class group playing small sided games. It’s been wonderful to see such huge improvement in ball control and accuracy of passing, as well as great team work skills in action during this unit. The reception class have been working on throwing skills. To do this, we set up targets around the gym and throw bean bags at them. Lots of fun!

Science

The Year 5-6 group completed their Haunted House projects and presented them to each other. They are currently looking great while on display out the front of the library. This concludes their unit of work on electricity. From next week we will be looking at biological sciences. The Year 3-4 group have started an investigation that will record the growth of a range of germinating seeds. The students made predictions, set up an experiment and will now record any growth. Each class independently decided the conditions under which the seeds will germinate, so it will be interesting to see how it all works out!

The Year 1-2 group have been looking at adaptations that animals make to help them survive across a range of environments and habitats. The students enjoyed creating their own animals with features designed specifically to survive in each environment.

The receptions have continued looking at mini beasts with a close focus on the physical features of each type of insect. This week we have been looking at insects that have wings and can fly.
