School Counsellor

Emily Bieber - at Kalinda on Mondays and Thursdays in Term 3.

August 26th marked Wear it Purple day! I saw so much purple in my community and it put a huge smile on my dial. Even the butcher was wearing purple.

At KPS we are celebrating a week later – as the saying goes, “better late than never”. I actually think it’s pretty cool. It means that no matter what day of the week, our community can send a strong message that the Kalinda family is a true rainbow ally! We can wear purple anytime!

So, what does Wear it Purple Day mean and why is it important? There is stacks of information on this website https://www.minus18.org.au/ which is your one-stop shop for all things youth and rainbow.

The Kalinda community is made up of people from all walks of life and we absolutely need to celebrate this and make sure everyone feels welcome. Wear it Purple Day says:

  1. “I’m an LGBTIQ+ ally”
  2. “I’m an LGBTIQ+ community member”
  3. I love or care about someone who is homosexual or transgender or part of the queer community.

When you “wear it purple”, students know that they can ask for help or simply feel safe to say “This is me”. Mental health outcomes for people in the rainbow community are unacceptably poor. Every little bit helps and says “we see you, you are valid.”

It’s never too early to start talking about identity. Children at all ages and stages can have these conversations with a trusted adult.
