Principal's report

Mr Shaun McClare

I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which Kalinda Primary school gathers, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. I would like to pay my respects to their elders past, present, and emerging.

Collaborative Writing

Writing is generally a very individual activity, however, one of the great strengths in our pedagogical approach to writing at Kalinda is the way we work together to improve writing skills.

Our teachers are highly skilled at modelling great writing practices, but this becomes even more powerful when teachers collaborate with their students to create co-constructed pieces of writing.

Developing the capacity to give and receive feedback on our writing (as well as other areas of the curriculum) is really important. Each class has an Author's Chair where students get to share their writing with the class and receive constructive feedback on their work. Giving and receiving constructive feedback is a skill that is important in life and in the workplace, and it makes our students far stronger writers.

Students working on collaborative pieces of writing in small groups is also another powerful part of our instructional approach. 'The whole is greater than the sum of its parts' is something that comes to mind when we see students working together with their writing. Students build upon each other's ideas, edit the work together and have fun during the process.

Below is one example of great collaborative writing from Rory, Isaac and Johnnie in Year 3. They have worked on this piece of writing together, before individually publishing their work. Well done on some fantastic writing!!

MS Readathon

Congratulations and thank you to the students who took part in our Kalinda MS Readathon team this year. At the time of writing this article, the students collectively raised over $3,666.00 which will go towards supporting families of those who are living with MS in Australia. Together they read over 547 books in just one month! What a fantastic effort! Our top 5 fundraisers this year were: Lilah W of 3B, Abi C of 3RL, Alexis W of 6D, Flynn T of 4S and Tilly S of 3RL.

Thank you to Mrs Boulton and Mrs Draffin who co-ordinated our MS Readathon efforts this year.

Father's Day Stall

It has been so great today noticing a buzz around the school as students prepare to celebrate some special figures in their lives. Thank you to our Parents and Friends Committee who always work long and hard to ensure that these events are not only of high quality but importantly that all students feel included. Gifts and cards have been lovingly selected and I know that Dads, Grandpas, Carers and Friends are going to feel so loved. Thank you also to Andrea Badlee who has championed the inclusion of senior students to gain some retail experience, alongside their involvement in other fundraisers where they have opportunity to assist and raise their own funds towards graduation. What an empowering opportunity and the legacy of this effort will be felt by generations to come.

2023 Enrolments

For any families in our community with younger siblings planning to come to begin at Kalinda in 2023, we would ask that you please submit their enrolment form as soon as possible. This allows us to begin planning for 2023.
