Go the Distance For Refugees Strava Challenge

Throughout the year our SRC Leaders and the Catholic Identity and Mission Team have been planning activities and initiatives to ensure that our 2021 Brigidine Day celebrations are a wonderful reflection of community spirit and highlight what we as a community value.

Following the seeds of justice camp earlier this year, our Living Justice leaders Mia Layne and Olivia Cooper and our Sustainability leaders Skye Zhu-Maguire and Sophia Bryant put forward that our fundraising efforts for Brigidine Day this year should be directed towards the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP).  BASP was founded by Sister Brigid Arthur and Sister Catherine Kelly in 2001.  Over the past 20 years they have worked tirelessly to provide hospitality, advocacy and practical support for people seeking asylum.

When lockdown 6.0 hit, the Catholic Identity and Mission Team explored some new and innovative ways that we as a school community could support BASP and from initial conversations the ‘Go the Distance for Refugees’ Strava Challenge was developed.

Over the past month, 164 members of our community have participated in the challenge covering in excess of 10,000km.  The top 10 student achievers in our Strava challenge were:

  1. Chloe Joughin – 647 km
  2. Michaela Meyer – 485.5 km
  3. Gladys Mpakame – 463.1 km
  4. Eliza Wong – 378.2 km
  5. Hannah Young – 351.4 km
  6. Sian Napier – 256.8 km
  7. Olivia Tubb – 235.4 km
  8. Megan Golby – 202.1 km
  9. Lucy Bracchi – 172.8 km
  10. Thea Lambe – 147.1 km

Whilst it has been wonderful on Brigidine Day to celebrate these remarkable achievements, it is important to remember that this challenge was designed to raise awareness and funds for the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project who work tirelessly to give a voice to those who have no voice in our society.  Please consider sponsoring our team so that they can continue their great work in acting for justice with strength and kindliness.

It was wonderful to connect with the 156 Grade 6 students who will be joining our school community in 2022 on Wednesday afternoon.  Thank you to all our student leaders who assisted with this event and facilitated small group activities about life at Kilbreda College.  Thank you to Erin Carroll, Rachel Jones, Sienna Koop, Lola Martin, Alicia Noble, Francesca Malignaggi and Sian Napier for leading various aspects of the event.

We are very much looking forward to strengthening our connections with these students and families during Term 4 in preparation for Orientation Day.
