Sport

We are all hopeful (and perhaps a little optimistic) that there may be some inter school sporting events run in Term 4. If these events do not go ahead, we will organise some sport competitions for students to participate in when they return to the College.

We hope everyone has been out and about keeping fit and being active! It is very important to use this time to get out in your local neighbourhood and encourage all members of your family to also get up and get active!

Olympic Change Maker

The Australian Olympic Change Maker Program is run by the Australian Olympic Committee and seeks to identify students around the country who are making a difference in their school community every day. The award recognises and rewards Year 10 to 12 students who embody the ideals of the Olympic spirit, friendship, respect and teamwork and who are demonstrating the Olympic spirit through leadership and driving positive change in their communities.

Each school can nominate two students from Year 10 to 12 to be Olympic Change Makers and they are invited to attend a national summit. This year we nominated Year 11 students, Erin Carroll and Megan Jenkins who attended the virtual summit in the last week of Term 3 and who have both been successful in being recognised as Olympic Change Makers for 2021.

Erin is an outstanding cricketer who has demonstrated leadership through her participation at the highest level. Erin has represented Victoria in cricket and indoor cricket for the last five years, captaining the team on several occasions. Despite her large time commitment to cricket, Erin has always been willing to participate in many school sports and is always a positive team member. She leads by example by always being prepared to step out of her comfort zone and participate in activities and sports that are not her specialties while also encouraging those around her to be involved.

Megan not only participates in lifesaving and patrols at her local beach but has also been passing on her love of the sport through her role as a ‘Nippers’ volunteer coach for the last three years. She is passionate about assisting younger people to develop their beach and water safety skills and initiated our College’s involvement in the State Lifesaving Championships. When competing for the College, Megan always demonstrates good sportsmanship, encourages those around her to get involved and always gives her best.

Olympic Change Maker Reflection

Megan and I were privileged enough to receive the Olympic Change Maker Award this year as nominated by the College. We were able to attend an online forum, in which we had the opportunity to listen to some of the Australian Olympians who competed at this year’s Olympics in Tokyo. We heard from the likes of Zac Stubblety-Cook, Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar. They gave us an insight into the life of an elite athlete and their experiences during the Olympics. Each of the athletes highlighted a theme which included excellence, respect and friendship. One of the key messages I took home was the importance of embracing personal values in sport and learning to control the controllables. Overall, it was a very humbling experience and we are extremely grateful for the opportunity to attend the forum, to further better ourselves in our respective sports.
