Co-Curricular Update

Debating

I am pleased to inform our community that the Year 8 Debating Team have advanced to the Semi-Final round of the Catholic Schools’ Debating Association (CSDA) competition. The team made up of Felix Ryder, George Lahoud, Cristian Ettorre and coached by Old Boy Gianluca Pecora, were magnificent and deserved victors in their Quarter-Final debate against Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview yesterday. They will now take on Marist Sisters Woolwich this Friday 22 October and on behalf of the SPC community, I would like to wish them the best of luck. I am certain they will do themselves and the College proud.

Commencement of Senior School Summer Sport

As indicated previously, the College is preparing for the commencement of Summer Sport. Parents/carers and students are to note that whilst community sport may have been granted approval to commence, the restrictions currently in place for Level 3 plus schools does not allow the College to follow suit at present. That said, it has been noticeable that restrictions are being lifted at a steady rate and as such, I present the following information, subject to NSW Public Health Orders and Government advice so that parents/carers, students, and coaches can plan accordingly:

  • Swimming Squad – training in the College pool is set to resume in the week commencing Monday 1 November. Mr Brennan and Mr Calavassy will disseminate relevant information to those boys who indicated that they would like to be part of the Swimming Squad. The Annual SPC Invitation Swimming Carnival is set to proceed at Ryde Aquatic Centre, albeit it had been postponed and will now be held on the evening of Friday 26 November.

  • Cricket, Baseball and Basketball trials are scheduled to begin in the week commencing 8 November. Early indications suggest that a larger than usual number of students have selected to represent the College in Basketball. Sadly, due to the lack of facilities and unavailability of the gym during the HSC examination period, the College is not able to go beyond the 22 teams we ordinarily enter in the ISA Competition. As a result, some boys will unfortunately miss out on selection. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like your son to trial for another Summer Sport if he is unsuccessful in making a Basketball team.

Furthermore, given the above-mentioned constraints in relation to Basketball facilities, parents/carers ought to note that boys will primarily train off-site this term. The College is currently negotiating the hire of court space on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons along with similar court space on Saturdays between now and the end of Term 4. In essence, each age group will have the opportunity to have at least three trials over a three-week period. Those trialing on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons will be transported by bus to the venue at 3:20 PM with the bus expected to return to the College at 5:10 PM. Further details relating to the venue and possible pick-up times will be distributed to the Basketball fraternity in due course.

Having been fortunate enough to return to the College campus this week, I can attest to the fact that it is great to be back. I look forward to seeing the remaining cohorts join us next week and can’t wait for the Co-curricular Program to get back to normal proceedings. I also sense the boys can’t way to get back out there with their mates and represent St Patrick’s College with passion and pride.
