Duke of Edinburgh Award

Camp One

On Tuesday 10 and Thursday 12 March, two groups of students headed off to Phillip Island for the first Duke of Edinburgh Award camp of 2020.

The first group began their day by hiking from Kilcunda to the 'pink house' which is approximately 8km. However, the second group did this hike in reverse, due to their hotter weather conditions.

We headed back to the caravan park to choose our tents and set up our areas. Then, we went down to the beach to cool down and back to camp to cook our dinner. After dinner we went down to the beach again, walked along and then up to the bridge and found a playground on the other side.

After a good night's rest, we completed our hike for the second day, Cape Woolamai. It was a beautiful walk with very pretty views and it was a favourite for many of the girls.

This camp was a great experience for all of us girls and it was also really good preparation for what is to come in November.

Camp Two

Last week 57 students from Year 9 set off to Phillip Island for their Duke of Edinburgh Practice Camp. Over two days we hiked a total of 20km, 13km on the first day and 7km on the next day.

The weather made the hike more challenging as it was a 30‎°C day and we were carrying packs full of supplies such as food, water, bedding and clothes. Once we arrived at our campsite, tents were set up and we settled in for an afternoon of fun. We were lucky enough to be able to go down to the beach and cool off by paddling our sore feet. Later that night we had to cook ourselves dinner on Trangias which proved challenging for some but meant our packs would be lighter for the hike the next day. Thank goodness!

The next morning, after a restless night’s sleep, everyone made themselves breakfast and packed for the walk ahead. The walk provided stunning views and wonderful experiences.

I am looking forward to completing our next camp at Wilson's Promontory in November.
