THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

"Love the Lord your God. Love your neighbour.”

Year B | Sunday 31 October | green

Preparing to hear God's word

How would you describe what a rule is? Why do we need rules?

Can you name some rules in your family or school?

The Gospel Story

One of the important men in the community asked Jesus what the most important commandment is. Jesus tells the people, 'You must love your neighbour as yourself. However Jesus took the command a little further. In its original context, 'neighbour' meant only the Jewish people. However, Jesus' mission is to everyone. The command is to love all people, not just our own kind.

The Gospel

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark                   12:28-31

Love the Lord your God. Love your neighbour.

One of the teachers of the Law of Moses came up

while Jesus and the Sadducees were arguing.

When he heard Jesus give a good answer, he asked him,

"What is the most important commandment?"

Jesus answered, "The most important one says:

'People of Israel, you have only one Lord and God.

You must love him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.'

The second most important commandment says:

'Love others as much as you love yourself.'

No other commandment is more important than these."

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflecting on the Gospel - discussion

Jesus told the people: Love God and love people. These two commandments were not new. What was new and a challenge was that Jesus put these two commandments together and said that one depends on the other.

Loving God means that we have to love people.

THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

"This poor widow has given more than all the others.”

Year B | Sunday 7 November | green

Preparing to hear God's word

What does it mean to be generous?

Think of a generous person you know, and ask God to bless them.

The Gospel Story

There was an offering box near the temple where people came to give money. Many rich people put a lot of money in the box. A poor widow, a lady whose husband had died, had only two coins left to live on. She put both of those coins into the offering box. Jesus said these two coins were worth more than all the money the rich people gave since they had given their extra money that they didn’t need.

The Gospel

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark                   12:41-44

This poor widow has given more than all the others.

Jesus was sitting in the temple near the offering box and watching people put in their gifts.

He noticed that many rich people were giving a lot of money.

Finally, a poor widow came up and put in two coins that were worth only a few pennies.

Jesus told his disciples to gather around him.

Then he said:

"I tell you that this poor widow has put in more than all the others.

Everyone else gave what they didn't need.

But she is very poor and gave everything she had.

Now she doesn't have a cent to live on."

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reflecting on the Gospel - discussion

Think about the things that you have plenty of that you could share with others. Perhaps you could share some of your lunch with a friend. Perhaps you could give some of your clothes or toys to the poor.

What is something that you would find very difficult to share?
