Let the Games Begin!

When I found out I had been elected as Thoresby House Prefect I was excited to get the House Competition running again, after a long break due to COVID-19. Until our most recent House Sports afternoon on Monday 22 November, the Senior Years had not collaborated in several months.

It was wonderful to see so many students participating, and some friendly competition. Mr Smyth and Mia Giannopolous ran an intense game of dodgeball, whilst Mr Doman cast his watchful eye over Oscar Wilson’s biased umpiring. Overall, it was a fantastic event and a great re-introduction into House activities! The students and teachers are now preparing for our annual Swimming Carnival which is arguably the School’s biggest contest. The House Prefects look forward to seeing the same amount of enthusiasm in the pool next year, and Thoresby coming out on top (as the best House of course)!

Paddle-boarding and Movie Nights with Year 10s

Although it is disappointing COVID-19 spoiled our initial plans and really minimised the scope of the camp, the two-day retreat in itself was fantastic, despite the awful weather. For me personally, being able to move away from both my bedroom and school for just a few days after weeks of lockdown was great, and I didn’t know how beneficial it was to have that mental reset until after I got home. Chock-full of group activities, mentor sessions and time to spend with friends, the retreat posed the opportunity to both have fun and reflect.

The standup paddle-boarding and movie night was fun for sure, but the absolute highlight of the camp for me was by far the letters we received from our parents, or in my case, parents, aunties and uncles, and my grandparents. In that moment reading them all, I felt so appreciated and loved but also extremely grateful that I have such a wonderful family, and I know pretty much everyone else would’ve felt the exact same way.

The retreat was short, but in my opinion, necessary, so thank you, Mr Naude, for making it all happen even though the circumstances were against us.
