On the 20th July, music students with an interest in Jazz participated in an improvisation and composition workshop auspiced by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival’s outreach team.
Students tried out some composition techniques, and created a fantastic work featuring everyone in the group.
Many thanks to Cheryl, Stephen and Marcos who shared their professional journey, and inspired the students to create a great piece of music.
Intermediate Music Camp
On 24th and 25th July, the Intermediate Band and Intermediate Jazz Ensemble headed down to Angahook Camp in Airey’s Inlet for the annual Intermediate Music Camp. It was an action-packed two days, where the students not only improved their music skills but also tried rock-climbing, zip-lining, the giant swing, low ropes course, interacting with the native birds, a night walk and roasting marshmallows in the campfire! They concluded the camp with a family BBQ and concert, where they showed off their improved performance skills to their families. It was a lot of fun and congratulations to the students for their wonderful behaviour, which was also mentioned by the camp staff. A special thanks to Rochelle O’Mara and Tony Phelps (parents of Charlie Phelps), who cooked the BBQ food for the second year in a row! Thanks also to the music staff: Mrs Linton, Ms Humphrey, Mrs Moffatt, and Gabe Brdar for giving up their time to make this event happen.

One lucky group from Year 1 VET is participating in the ‘Come together’ festival, a FreeZa/QMF funded initiative, that sees one band from each of 11 participating schools come together to perform at the Queenscliff Town Hall on September 10th. Ahead of this, these students took part in a two -day songwriting and recording intensive hosted by APRA AMCOS’ Song maker’s Program. This program took place at Belmont High School, and we welcomed Clonard, Kardinia, Geelong High School and their teachers for two days of creative collaboration! They wrote some amazing songs, and learnt so much about the music industry and the writing and recording process from the Songmaker mentors.
