Book of the Week

The House of Shells

by Efua Traoré

Kuki is cursed.

She is shy and has trouble making friends, but worse still, she might have been born with the curse of the Abiku – a spirit said to inhabit the bodies of children until they turn thirteen years old and kill them on their birthdays! Kuki doesn’t think she is cursed – she’s having a hard time already dealing with a new home, a new stepfather, and bullies at school – how could being cursed make her life any worse?

One day, Kuki discovers a mysterious abandoned house hidden in the forest, and meets a young girl called Enilo. Kuki and Enilo become the best of friends, until the truth of Enilo’s nature threatens Kuki’s life…

New to the library, The House of Shells is a refreshingly diverse story set in modern-day Nigeria.
