Rugby Wrap Up against St Stanislaus’

Last Saturday the College hosted St Stanislaus’ College from Bathurst. With the opening of the new Scientia Building, the Breen Oval grandstands were packed with parents/carers, students and Old Boys. Special mention and thank you to Year 11 and Year 5 for their tremendous job in cheering on their peers at Supporters’ Day.

There is a proud rivalry between SPC and ‘Stannies’ when it comes to Rugby which sees the two schools play for some silverware. Unfortunately, a narrow loss for the Fourth XV (12 – 17) saw Stannies retain the Dan Kerlin Cup.

First XV dispatched their opposition in fantastic style, putting on a show for all watching. The forwards carried hard and bullied the St Stanislaus forwards, opening the game up for the backs to score something fantastic tries. An impressive 55 – 17 win saw Captain Bryn Williams presented with the O’Hara Trophy.

Despite those losses in some of the lower grades, wins to our Second XV, 16B, 15A, 15B, 14A, 13A and 13B teams contributed to a successful day of Rugby. Congratulations to all teams for their valiant efforts across the board. The College did win the Mark McFadden Aggregate Shield which is contested between all A and B fixtures. With eight wins to only two losses, SPC retain the Shield until we play again next season.

Back to Breen Day

For forward planning, Saturday 19 August will see the College hold its annual ‘Back to Breen’ day. The College will host St Augustine’s College in Rugby. I would like to encourage all students, families, and Old Boys to make their way down to the College to join in the celebrations.

Athletics Track and Field Season

As we know, the College athletics season does overlap with the end of the Winter sports season. Despite the fact that many boys will be involved in Rugby, Football or Tennis they are encouraged to attend one training session per week while still involved in these activities. Once their Winter commitments have concluded, boys are then expected to attend a minimum of two training sessions per week to be adequately prepared for competition.

A training schedule will be published to the boys next week, with Invitational Carnivals and ISA Championships taking place at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre (SOPAC) on the following dates:

  • Saturday 26 August
  • Saturday 2 September
  • Saturday 9 September
  • Tuesday 12 September – ISA Athletics Championships

Summer Sport Signups

Summer sport sign-ups for Baseball, Basketball and Cricket will be conducted in the coming weeks. I would encourage boys to speak with their parents/carers about the commitment required to be involved in a Summer sport. May I remind all parents/carers and boys that these signups represent a binding commitment to the entire season.

The Summer sports trials commence later this term with ISA Basketball and Cricket fixtures commencing in Term 4. NDJCA Cricket and RHBL Baseball fixtures usually commence in September. All competitions have concluded by Week 7, Term 1 2023.

Coaches Wanted

The College wishes to invite anyone who would be available to assist with coaching over the coming Summer season. Coaches are sought for Basketball, Baseball and Cricket in both the Junior and Senior Schools. Preference will be given to those who have coaching qualifications and have had previous experience in coaching boys. Please email your expression of interest to me (anthony.calavassy@spc.nsw.edu.au) by Friday 25 August.
