ITALIAN

Prep

This term in Italian, in keeping with our whole school inquiry unit of Discovery, the children in Prep are learning about Pinocchio and his adventures discovering Italy.  The children read a story about how Geppetto made Pinocchio out of a log of wood and we will learn about his adventures discovering Italy.  In the next few weeks the children will learn about where Pinocchio originated and some of Italy’s famous cities and landmarks.

Years 1-6

This term in Italian the children are learning about Our Solar System (Il Sistema Solare). This unit of work ties in with our whole school Inquiry unit of Discovery.  This unit aims to spark curiosity and cultivate a basic understanding of space and the wonders that exist beyond our planet.

In the Junior Learning Community the children have been learning the names of the planets in Italian and drew each planet with their distinguishing features.  They learnt the correct order of the planets in relation to the sun and have begun a cut and paste activity, labelling each planet in Italian and placing them in the correct order from the sun.

In Years 3-6, the children have been learning the names of the planets in Italian as well as the name of the biggest satellite the earth has, namely the moon. They challenged each other to place the planets  in the correct order in relation to the sun.  The children have learnt how to use different superlatives such as vicino, lontano, grande, caldo when describing the planets.  They made the connection between the days of the week in Italian and the planet the day is named after.
