Year 4/5/6
In Religious Education the students in 4/5/6 have been learning about each Sunday’s Gospel. We focused on ‘The Parable of the Weeds’ and ‘The Parable of the Mustard Seed'. In the Parable of the Weeds, Jesus compares the world to a field where both wheat (representing believers) and weeds (symbolising evil) grow together. This teaches us about the coexistence of good and evil in life, urging patience and trust in God. The Parable of the Mustard Seed emphasises the extraordinary growth potential of faith. From a tiny seed springs a mighty tree, showcasing the remarkable power of belief and the faith's growth. We then participated in an activity where we wrote a prayer for someone else or a kind action we want to do for someone on a piece of paper and we went outside and dug a small hole. We planted these prayers or ‘seeds’ in the hole and this symbolised us putting these positive actions or prayers back into God’s creation. As we grow our positive actions grow, helping people see the good in our faith.
This term we have been learning about Measurement, including perimeter, area, volume and capacity. To learn why the formula for triangles is base times height divided by 2, we did an activity where we turned the 4 types of triangles into squares or rectangles and investigated by having the same base and height but making it into a square. It showed that the space left in the square added up to the same area of the triangle, which is the reason we have to divide it by 2. The students had so much fun investigating this and creating a poster to hang up in the classroom.
In Inquiry, our young explorers embarked on a captivating mission to unravel the secrets of light bending. Armed with water, a glass, and a ruler, they set forth on their scientific adventure. Plunging the ruler into the water, they discovered an astonishing revelation, the light kept the ruler intact. Curiosity didn't stop there! With excitement, they added cooking oil and repeated the test. The ruler appeared to bend, as if disconnected at the top! Through this inquiry, our students ignited their passion for discovery, which was the topic for this term.
In Literacy, the students of Yr 4/5/6 have been taking part in Literature Circles. This is where they read a text and talk about it in a group setting and then complete specific tasks according to their role for the week. This term we have been learning about informative texts, so we have been reading articles and nonfiction texts in this time. The students are having so much fun diving into their interests and what is happening around the world.
As we have been learning about rockets and thrust, in particular, the Yr 5/6 students have done a range of experiments to experience what thrust is from a balloon. Creating a hovercraft out of a bottle top and CDs, to a rocketship from a string and a balloon. The students had so much fun and they loved investigating thrust through experiments.
The students of 4/5/6 have been starting to learn about Confirmation and why it is important, also why they are participating in this Sacrament. To start this, we are learning about Saints, specifically the saint they have chosen that represents an example of who they want to be like in their faith journey. The students are answering questions about their saint to learn about the life and what made them a saint.
The Year 5/6 students have embarked on their journey of Confirmation. In class we have been learning about the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit. The students have been thinking of ways in which we can show these gifts in everyday life. We have also been learning
about why we do sacraments, what Confirmation is and why Confirmation is so important. The students created a stained glass window to celebrate their Confirmation.
