What's Happening in

RE Classrooms?

Week 4 Term 2 2021

This week students in Years 7-9 have commenced their third topic for the year.

Year 7 RE - Catholic Beliefs and Practices

Year 7 students have just commenced the unit “Catholic Beliefs and Practices”. This unit is intended to deepen students’ awareness of what it means to be Christian and more specifically what it means to belong to the Catholic community. Our two focus areas for this topic are:

  • To explore the distinctive core beliefs and practices of Catholicism.
  • To understand the various ways Catholics live out these beliefs.

Students will learn to make connections between the beliefs and practices of Catholicism, a key skill in Religious Education in high school.

Year 8 RE - The Church Spreads the Good News

This unit provides the opportunity to study the formation of the early Christian communities in response to the initial proclamation of the Gospel. Students will study key people, events and themes in Church history from the birth of the Church at Pentecost until the Edict of Milan in 313AD. Our focus areas for this topic are:

  • To learn what it means to ‘preach and live the Gospel’.
  • To learn about the ways in which Christianity spread from its Jewish roots.
  • To learn about how Christians continue to spread the message of Jesus today, in contemporary society.

One key skill students practise in this unit is linking traditional teachings and historical events to contemporary actions that Christians demonstrate in their everyday lives. This builds on the knowledge and understanding gained in the previous unit “Easter Experiences”.

Year 9 RE - Christianity in the Middle Ages

In this unit, students consider dramatic societal changes that have occurred in their own lives and are invited to understand Medieval Europe as a time of growth, change and development. Different views on the role and place of religion and faith in Australian society today are considered alongside the faith and practices of a range of medieval Christians. The role of faith and religion in the life of at least one individual medieval Christian and in medieval European society as a whole are examined.
