On Friday 23rd April 2021, Beaufort Secondary College held their ANZAC Day Assembly. The assembly brought our students, staff and official guests; Mr Col Gerrard, Mr Des Weller and Mr Karl Schier, together to remember and reflect upon the great sacrifices that have been made so that we can enjoy the freedoms we do today.
The service was run by Student Leaders; Jaelyn Brand, Naomi Gerrard, Luke Arvidson, Ethan Page and Jack Peacock, who contributed excerpts from poems, letters and diary entries that had resonated with them during their research. Particularly powerful were the letters that Naomi and Jaelyn shared from their own family archives.
The service included the National Anthem in both English and Eora, a First Nations language, which was interesting and enjoyable to hear, especially for our students studying the popular First Nations subject this year.
Liam McLinden and Leo Robinson had the important role of attending the flag, with Jet Kerr and Tucker Devries standing sentry for the entire service in their army cadet uniforms.
The stage was decorated by the Year 7 students who had made poppies and written their own poems on them.
The service concluded with the wreaths that each form group had created, being laid on the stage. This was followed by the Year 12 students laying poppies around the wreaths. By the end of the service the stage resembled Flander’s Fields.
For all those who have sacrificed so much, we will remember you.
"LEST WE FORGET"
