Preparations for this year’s Sports Day have been underway since the beginning of the term. For parents and families who are new to our school, please be advised that each student has been allocated a house colour. A list with the corresponding details are on display near your child’s classroom.
We welcome back students from the Wirreanda Specialist Sports Program to assist teachers with running our stations. We continue to promote opportunities to pursue sport outside of school including through community clubs volunteering to run small sided games and clinics. We appreciate their efforts in particular due to the financial hardship on clubs and organisations effected by the restrictions from COVID-19. The organisations include Rugby SA, Hackham Hawks and Noarlunga United Soccer Club.
Sports Day will be held on Friday 18/9 (Week 9) and will begin at 8:40am and finish at approximately 2:15pm. In the event of bad weather, Sports Day will be postponed to the following Friday in Week 10, 25/9.
As has been the case for the past two years, students will compete in their year levels. Opportunities to earn bonus ‘Village Points’ will be available throughout the day for students who demonstrate school values. Past examples include picking up rubbish and volunteering to represent another colour on top of their own in football, rugby and soccer to balance out uneven numbers.
In Term 3 our primary students have been learning a unit on Volleyball. We met with PE teachers from Woodcroft and Morphett Vale Primary Schools over a student free day to plan a unit on Volleyball that we would all teach and moderate together. The purpose of this joint planning is to create a consistent library of lessons and units for all teachers in the partnership to access in future. Our Junior Primary Students have continued to learn fundamental movement skills in preparation for Sports Day. From this week onwards, each lesson will focus on a specific event to prepare our Castle students for Sports Day on 18/9.
District Athletics
The District Athletics Carnival has been rescheduled to Term 4, to be held on Friday Week 1, 16/10. All students that were selected to represent the school in Term 1 will receive notes home in the next fortnight. We require at least 4 volunteers for the day to assist with marshalling and supervision in order for our school to attend the event. Students and volunteers will travel by bus.
Soccer
In week’s 2 and 3 of this term, our year 6/7’s competed in two SAPSASA Carnivals hosted at Hackham East Primary School, giving our students who would have otherwise played in the cancelled season a chance to represent our school. The carnivals were always going to be a challenge as we competed against teams with more experience, however as always, our students rose to the challenge when it came to displaying our school values in representing our school as was acknowledged by visiting schools. Congratulations to Rylee Deer scoring against Meadows Primary in our opening match of the girls Carnival. Thank you to Ms Wiese for supplying oranges for the girls. Thank you also to Kevin Bartlett, the Convenor of Onkaparinga SAPSASA District for your attendance and positive feedback about the Carnivals organisation.
Girls Football
Well done to our year 6/7 girls SA Sports Aussie footy team, today we came away with a win and a loss, unfortunately knocking us out of the competition. None the less I was super proud of the team for their conduct both on and off of the field. A special thanks to Jason Castleman and Craig Warman for umpiring for us on the day. Without your contribution we would not have been able to play.
