All In This Together

Another Week of Success

We have successfully navigated another week of remote learning and in the wider community context we all need to feel encouraged that numbers are starting to head consistently downward on the Corona rollercoaster. This week, I would also like to welcome Mr Kyle Simkin as our Acting Assistant Principal for the remainder of 2020 and he will be a great addition to our Principal team, as we continue to navigate our current circumstances. Congratulations Kyle.

Following the advice of the Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) a small number of our Year 12 students are now able to be onsite to complete essential assessments and tasks. These have generally been for those studies where it is not possible to be done remotely and have a strong practical emphasis or require the use of specialist equipment in order to ensure the task can be completed.

A real positive from Remote Learning 2.0 has been for us to live our school values and learn together and from each other about  what works best to progress student learning.  I would like to once again acknowledge our college community members for the resilience, adaptability, care and support we have continued to demonstrate throughout this term. Singer-sage John Lennon most succinctly  captures the phase that we are in at the moment and in these few words echoes some key elements of endurance, perspective and hope: "Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end."  So, we should just continue to enjoy the little things too as reminded by Bob Marley's : "Don't worry 'bout a thing, cause every little thing's gonna be alright."

It’s always interesting to get others’ perspectives of the remote learning experience too. This week our English learning area staff have been creative and provided a series of song titles. Their playlist needs no further explanation!

  • Freedom, George Michael
  • The Never Ending Story
  • I want to break free, Queen
  • Go solo, Zwete
  • With a little help from my friends, Joe Cocker
  • Bored in the house, Tyga
  • Shiver, Boys Next Door
  • Somewhere over the rainbow

The completion of our new Senior School building is now only a few weeks from handover. The stage 4 restrictions have limited the number of workers that can be on site but it has meant we are still pushing forward with final paving, fit out and addressing of defects. Our return to onsite learning will allow our students to use this terrific new facility.

So indeed in this time of coronavirus shutdowns and despite the related health and economic fears, we are still continuing to push forward, making the best of our circumstances and powering through. Spring awaits!

Progress Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews

Progress reports for all students will be available via Compass on Tuesday 1st September and are a great opportunity for us to acknowledge the hard work of students over the course of the first 7 weeks of this semester. It has been fantastic to see the resilience of our students during this time and the great work that so many are producing.

Interviews for Years 7-10 students will be held on Wednesday 9th September from 11am to 7pm. There will be no scheduled classes running on this day for all year levels. Please note that this is one week earlier than was communicated earlier in the term. Bookings for these interviews will open on Tuesday 1st of September and close at 4pm on the 8th of September. These interviews will be held over Microsoft Teams and a guide explaining how to join an interview will be posted on Compass next week. Interview sessions are planned to run for 5-8 minutes to allow parents and staff time to login to subsequent interviews.

Families are encouraged to book an interview to discuss their child’s progress, particularly if there are any areas of concern. Alternatively, if you do not have any particular issues you wish to discuss with your child’s teachers, but would like a quick update on their progress, staff can be contacted via email during school hours.

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT OUR HERITAGE PERPETUAL SCHOLARSHIP?

In 2015 the RSC Heritage and Alumni Group introduced a scholarship for students starting in Years 11 and 12 at Ringwood Secondary College.  It was created to encourage students to stay at school and complete their VCE during the difficult times.  The scholarship offers $500 assistance towards fees and materials to eligible students who had good results in previous years and are experiencing personal hardship.

Application forms for this Heritage Perpetual Scholarship are now available from the college on 9870 2002 or from the college website.

The closing date for applications is Friday 16th October 2020 for the 2021 year and interviews will be conducted during October.

This scholarship has been supported by the early Ringwood High School students to assist students wishing to continue their schooling for Years 11 and 12 in 2021 at Ringwood Secondary College.
