From the Assistant Principal

Go Team!

At the moment, lots of us are revelling in the luxury of having football on television more often than not. A chance to lose ourselves in some normality is exciting, enjoying the great game from home, with our own moderately priced snacks. Not to mention the Aussie joy of barracking loudly, imagining how you would umpire better from your priviledged seat...and dreaming of a Saints premiership in the asterisk year (typical!). But I digress - I know that there are also others who could care less about football... nevertheless a football game presents a wonderful metaphor of the power of a team. When a football team is full of confidence, when they prepare well, communicate effectively, play unselfishly and do their best - more often than not this formula provides a win. If it doesn't, then there is optimism and resilience demonstrated as they prepare to try again the following week. Our Kalinda team is no different.

Many visitors through Kalinda over the years have commented on the Kalinda 'vibe'. Our community is incredibly strong and these recent times have demonstrated this over and over. Our entire staff, teaching and non-teaching - has demonstrated unwavering passion and determination to care for the academic and emotional wellbeing of all students and families. Our students have amazed us again and again in the ways they have engaged, challenged themselves and demonstrated resilience. And without doubt, none of this would be possible without the support of our parents and families. I don't know if anyone has thanked you lately but please accept our heartfelt thanks. For trusting our staff, for encouraging your child's learning, for juggling your personal lives and routines, and for giving your all to raise, nurture and encourage future world changers.

Last Friday's Home Sports Carnival day was such a magnificent example of the collective brilliance of the Kalinda team. From the tireless work of Miss Swingler, to the students who recorded instructional videos, the students who participated in many sports and the parents who supported, encouraged, prepared, filmed and even joined in on the fun. Thank you to everyone who participated - stay tuned for Miss Swingler's announcement of results soon!!!!

Stay safe Kalinda - sticking with my football metaphor: let's just take this one week at a time.

Dr Justin Coulson webinar

I hope that attendees of last week's webinar found it useful. As a parent and educator his 4 points of guidance for Parenting in Lockdown really resonated with me:

  • When your child is struggling to control their emotions, listen to them, stay calm and encourage them to join you in that calm;
  • Find humour or fun every day;
  • Encourage kindness to others;
  • Look for ways to talk with (and model) hope: talk about when good change will happen, not if.

You might enjoy Dr Coulson's latest thoughts on parenting during iso as well.
