MITS Classroom Term 2
There is never a dull moment in the MITS classroom and this term has certainly been no exception. The students start each day with 15 minutes of reading, where they have the opportunity to read with an adult a few times a week to focus on their individual goals.
Jamelia: “I will look for the clues that the author gives us to explain how a character is feeling.”
Des: “If I don't know what I'm reading, I will go back and reread.”
The focus on reading then continues with students breaking up into four, small, teacher-led groups to further develop decoding, comprehension and analytical skills.
Following reading, we shift to Maths, where the students have been learning about fractions: ordering, adding and subtracting them, converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions, and using different strategies to find equivalent fractions.
Left: Munyari & Malakai busily adding and subtracting fractions to ‘crack the code’ and right the impressive Amarah proudly showing off her mixed number to improper fraction working out.
We have been exploring the persuasive writing genre and the students have demonstrated their understanding of different persuasive techniques and powerful language as they write about their desire to change the Australian Anthem.
I will only listen and sing the anthem when it represents everyone in Australia. “Australians all let us rejoice…” They are the first words in our anthem. I strongly believe that the Australian National Anthem should be changed. This is because it doesn't represent all Australians currently, and needs to be modernised. If we change it, it will bring all cultures closer together as one!

As part of Intercultural Studies, the Year 7s all prepared and shared a presentation on a First Nations leader who they admire, with the list including David Gulpilil, Albert Namatjira and Archie Roach.
