What's Happening in Year 1/2!

The Year 1 & 2s have had a wonderful second term of learning!

This term they have continued to work hard in InitiaLit. The Year 1 students have learned what nouns, verbs and pronouns are and how to use them in their writing. They have also learned their vowels and how to identify long and short vowel sounds in words. The Year 2 students have learned what nouns, proper nouns and pronouns are and how to use them in their writing. They have also learned how to add the suffix ‘ing’ on to words.

In Writing, the students have been exploring super sentences. Super sentences focus on creating sentences that start with a capital letter, tell the reader about someone or something, make sense, and end with a full stop. Using super sentences in their writing this term has helped the students create wonderful informative texts about animals and lifecycles.

Through our inquiry unit titled “Cause and Effect” students have enjoyed learning about animals and their lifecycles starting with our trip to the Zoo! This unit has given us the opportunity to explore the needs, lifecycles, and habitats of animals as well as how our actions can impact the environment around us. The students then used the computers to research their animal of choice and create their amazing animal posters you can see below.

We have also explored the area of Chemical Sciences. Through this unit, the students have done a variety of experiments to learn more about states of matter and chemical reactions. Our Religion unit this term has further explored the topic of cause and effect, by asking ourselves how our actions affect others. This was done by exploring parables such as the lost sheep, Zacchaeus the tax collector, and the Prodigal Son to reflect on how we can choose to act in ways that have a positive effect on others. We have also explored the different way we can pray and created a class prayer book full of beautiful prayers written by the class.

Finally, our Maths units this term have explored Time and Data. The students have had a lot of fun learning about how to collect and represent data. Through this topic, the students were able to create their own questions to collect data such as “What is your favourite food?” they then surveyed their classmates and compiled their data to create amazing bar graphs as seen below. In our time use the students have learned how to read an analogue clock and created their own analogue clocks to practice. I look forward to continuing this learning journey with the Year 1 & 2 students next semester.
