Student Wellbeing

"STUDENT VOICE - HOUSE TEAM SPIRIT"

Student voice and participation encompass opportunities for students to have a say about things that affect them (voice), to make decisions about their learning and its context (agency or empowerment), and to improve their wellbeing, sense of self and connection to learning (engagement).  St Joseph's School  is committed to the active participation and voice of students in all aspects of school life, valuing the contributions that students are able to make to their faith, their school, their community and the common good.

One practise that utilises student voice at St Joseph's is our HOUSE SPIRIT PROGRAM.  With ALL Year 6 students named as House Team Captains for each of our houses of BUNURONG, MCAULEY, MAZENOD AND MANNIX. They aim to build an energetic, inclusive and supportive House System that will work towards creating a positive school culture in which all of our students from Prep to Year 6 will experience a true sense of belonging and connection! This  will exist for our school sports days, for working towards team goals in our classes (eg. house points), for working together during special days  and much more!

In Term 1, the House Team Captains attended a Leadership Day Incursion with Petrina and Karen from 'Our House Spirit'. They planned possible activities that could build connectedness between House Team members from all year levels across the school. The students enjoyed leading their team members at the Whole School Swimming Sports.

During Term 2, our House Team Leaders enjoyed cheering on their members at the School  Cross Country and enjoyed GREETING their House Team members at last Wednesday's Valet Drop-Off!

DO YOU KNOW............

                                               ..... who Daniel Mannix was?

........what Catherine McAuley had to do with our school beginnings?

.........where the land of the Bunurong (Boon Wurrung) People lie?

........what Eugene de Mazenod had to do with our parish?

Also during Term 2, as a part of their Faith-Based Inquiry unit on History and Change, Year 5/6 students explored the origins of their House Team Namesakes (those people and groups that our houses have been named after). This was inspired by past legendary teacher, HELEN BECKHAM, who shared her knowledge of the history of St Joseph's School and St Mary's Star of the Sea Parish recently. It was wonderful to have Mrs Beckham back, her presentation was enlightening and prompted the curiosity of our Year 6 House Leaders to delve deeper into how and why their houses had been named as such.

Our House Team Leaders look forward to sharing this newfound knowledge with all students from their House Team early in Term 3 as part of a special House Team Day.
