Grade 1 Newsletter

Early in the week, the Grade 1 students took part in a STEM lesson focusing on teamwork, engineering and sustainability.

The aim of the lesson was to improve our teamwork skills through listening, sharing ideas and modelling the school values. Our task was to build a bridge using classroom materials that stretched across a gap between two tables, however, there was a catch, we could only use a few different classroom items and each of them come at a cost. Each group had 10 tokens to purchase materials from the shopkeeper (the teachers) to make their bridge.

The prices were:

10 popsicle sticks = 1 token

30cm tape = 2 tokens

5 green hats = 1 token

5 unifix = 1 token

2 pieces of paper = 1 token

1 pair of scissors = 1  token

We planned our bridges and how we were going to spend our precious tokens before we began construction. We had a great time solving the problems that popped up during the making and had a really fun time.
