Term 3 Week 1

Farewell to Angela Vines and Mary Bedford

Yesterday we said farewell to two wonderful people from our school community, Angela Vines and Mary Bedford.

Angela has been an integral part of our school community since 2004 when she started as a learning support officer,  Angela’s wide repertoire of skills was recognised and her role evolved to being multi-faceted.  Angela for a number of years has worked as Library technician and IT support.  Her enormous contribution is evident throughout our wonderful library space.  Angela has for a long time also been the first port of call for all manner of technical support in the school ranging from generating reports, publishing the newsletter, maintaining our website, monitoring servers, keeping iPads and computers updated and functioning, liaising with IT suppliers and support services, maintaining and managing school software as well as being the resident photographer for the school.  There are many other tasks too, but too many to mention here. I know her friendship and humour will be missed by the many friends she has made at OLHC and we wish her well as she embarks on the first adventure of her ‘life after work’ hiking the Camino trail.  Angela is a member of our parish community so we look forward to keeping in touch at various events from time to time. Please take a moment to have a look at our student farewell page for Angela in this newsletter.

Mary began her journey at OLHC in 1998.  Mary taught across a range of year levels and subjects at OLHC and most recently she has been our Library and ICT teacher before going on leave in early 2021.  Mary has been a teacher since 1980 when she began her teaching career at St Matthew’s School in Fawkner North.  After two years she moved to Our Lady of the Way School in Kingsbury for five years, then a year at St Francis Xavier Montmorency before landing here at OLHC. Over this time, Mary has made a positive difference in the lives of thousands of students and their families as an outstanding educator and contributed greatly to the fabric of our school. She has been a great innovator, introducing robotics and involving students in understanding technology through hands-on experiences such as pulling apart keyboards and cameras, as well as a passionate gardener and conservationist who involved many students in the annual bird count.

I know you will join me in celebrating the great service that both these ladies have given to Catholic education and the OLHC community.

Welcome to Term 3

It was great to have all our students and staff back for the start of Term 3.  We began with a whole school assembly where we celebrated those that had a birthday over the holidays, recognised NAIDOC Week, revealed the beautiful indigenous handmade flags that the FIRE Carriers made and much more.  Well done to our FIRE Carriers, LSO Sue and Mrs Cummings for creating these flags with the hands of all the students in the school.  Each class provided hands of a different colour, symbolising our collective effort in this area. Please read Joseph N and Fletcher S’s report under the photos about the art pieces.

On Monday at assembly the FIRE Carriers revealed the art piece they had been working on. The piece they had been working on was the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, they had been hand painted by the FIRE Carriers themselves but they weren’t just the ordinary flags. Over the top of the painting were paper hands that had been coloured in with all sorts of patterns and textures, these were all coloured and painted by the students of the school. We asked all the classes to paint or colour the hands in a certain colour, the junior school’s hands went in the Torres Strait Islander flag and the senior school hands were on the Aboriginal flag. We discussed this when we had our meetings and we decided that we could do a whole school project. It also seemed suiting that we revealed the piece the day after NAIDOC week ended. This year’s theme was “Get Up! Stand Up! And Show Up!”.
