Year 9/10 Outdoor Education

On Wednesday 15th June, our Year 9 & 10 Outdoor Education class embarked on a three day, two night field experience to the Victoria Valley in the Grampians. Students have been honing their navigation, bush craft, weather reading and outdoor living skills over the past two terms, with this experience being a practical opportunity to apply their knowledge. Students base camped at Boreang Campground in the heart of the Victoria Valley, visiting iconic sites of the area such as Burrong Falls, Moora-Moora Reservoir, Brush Tailed Rock Wallaby research sites, and the iconic Reid Lookout. Students explored the Indigenous history of this landscape, developing their knowledge of how the native flora and fauna was utilised to craft tools, heal wounds and treat injuries.

Following principles of wilderness first aid, students also constructed stretchers to simulate a treatment response to spinal injury management, evacuating the injured party to safety. With two extremely successful night walks, students also spotted some of the local nocturnal fauna such as sugar gliders, ring tail possums and tawny frogmouths. With Pizza’s cooked on an open fire, plenty of laughter under torch light card games, and a rather cheeky possum named Edmond, the camp was a huge success. A big thanks goes to Ally Robinson & Caleb McNaughton for their leadership and support on this experience. A final thanks goes to the participants of this journey, who applied themselves wholeheartedly to the experience.

Year 9/10 Food Technology

Last week, Year 9/10 Food Tech made some amazing restaurant quality Cowboy Sliders! They also tried their hand at dumpling folding. These delights were immensely tasty! This week, they created some amazing salted caramel slice. Looks very impressive!

Year 12 Creswick Camp

Year 12 have been able to end Term 2 with an escape to beautiful Creswick. We have been staying at the Log Cabin Camps in an amazing Homestead. The trip started off well but it wasn’t long before we experienced some problems, breaking down just outside of Lismore and having to wait for a new bus to be brought out to us. By that time we were very hungry, which a trip to The Pancake Kitchen in Ballarat quickly fixed. A tour of Federation University, guided by one of our own past students, Micah Drake, was next on the agenda. Thanks Micah for sharing your neck of the woods with us.

Our arrival at Log Cabin Homestead in Creswick was well beyond what we had been expecting. We have been able to stay at a beautiful Homestead and have been VERY well looked after. Food has been fantastic, people friendly and accommodation very comfortable. Activities here have included Archery, Ropes Course, Zipline with the challenge of how many times you can pass a ball between each other, The Leap of Faith and a Milk Crate Stacking Challenge. In amongst that there has been the games room, cards, movies and just spending time together.

A focus of a couple of days away has been about the question of ‘Who Am I’ and thinking about the exciting adventure ahead as students prepare to leave School. They have been given time to consider this question and to see themselves as each, individually unique, talented and worthwhile. It has been such a privilege to be away with this wonderful group of young men and women. Thanks Year 12 for a great few days.
