Holy Cross happenings

While we were turning on our heaters and adding extra layers of warmth, a group of children at Holy Cross were thinking of others that may not have a new coat to wear this winter.

They met with our Wellbeing Leader and discussed ways to help others in need.

Together they joined to form a Mini Vinnies Group to meet regularly, reflect on the needs of the community and organise ways to help.

We are very proud of their initiative and the practical way they have been able to help others. While helping others, the children are also developing their leadership skills, helping to develop empathy, compassion and understanding within their school community and raising awareness about social justice issues.  They have written about their experience below.

Holy Cross Mini Vinnies collected warm clothing and blankets for the people that are in need of warmth this winter. These items will be going to people who don’t have enough so that they can stay warm in this icy winter. We would love to give people things such as blankets, coats, gloves, scarves and beanies. People in need would be very appreciative to receive the donations of warm clothing.

The clothes that we have collected are, beanies, scarfs, jumpers, blankets, gloves and even some snow suits for kids. We really appreciate all the clothes that have been donated to us. Thank you to everyone who donated, all this wouldn’t happen without you.

Grade Two Incursion:Toys Over Time.

Last week the Grade Twos participated in the ‘Toys over Time’ incursion to build on their knowledge of history, which is their current focus in Inquiry. During this incursion the children were introduced to a variety of toys that their parents and grandparents played with. All the children had an opportunity to explore/play with the toys and ask questions. Some of the toys the children explored were frisbees, rag dolls, roller skates and a Jack in the Box. Throughout the experience the children were encouraged to reflect on the similarities and differences between the toys in the incursion and the toys they play with today.

Below are some comments from the children:

“My favourite part was playing with the rollerskates because my mum used to have them.” - Mia

“I really liked the museum table because the toys were very old and I had never seen some of them before.” - Oliver

“My favourite part was when we were shown the elastic bands. We had to put them on our hands and make different shapes. I liked this part because it was really interesting. I made an octagon and a pyramid.” - Ruby

Grade One: 60s Day

To kick off Term Three our Grade Ones immersed themselves in a full day of fun 60s activities. The purpose of the day was to allow children to experience lifestyle aspects from an earlier time, and to consider how lifestyles can change from past to present. This focus connects to the children’s current Inquiry unit on History. Some of the activities the children experienced were retro dancing, music from the 60s, games and leisure activities from this time, and typical learning activities from the era. The day was full of laughter and learning.
