Modelling in Biology

Modelling in Biology

Year 11 and 12 Biology have been modelling different cellular processes over the last few weeks. The year 11s modelled the fluid mosaic model of cell membranes and discussed the benefits and limitations of using models in Science.

Now, a year later, the year 12s are building upon what they learned last year and are applying their depth studies on biotechnology to make a model of recombinant plasmids which can be used to make a transgenic organism. In this case they wanted to create a small ring of DNA which can be inserted into a bacteria and be used to make insulin for use be type 1 diabetics.

Models are very important in Science as it allows us to understand and visualise something that is too small, too big or too complicated in real life. Unfortunately they can over simplify or lead to misconceptions so it is important to always keep an open mind.
