Indigenous Perspectives

Koomurri Aboriginal Incursion

In Week 9, Year 9 students and special guests from the Support Unit participated in the Koomurri Aboriginal Incursion to supplement their English unit, ‘Indigenous Perspectives.’ Students had a fantastic time participating in a range of fun activities, which were facilitated by Uncle Russell, an Aboriginal Educator. This session included:

o   A didgeridoo show

o   Learning Aboriginal song and dance

o   Engaging in storytelling about the Dreaming and other aspects of Aboriginal culture

o   Learning about the importance of reconciliation

o   Demonstration of bush survival, artefacts and the use of weaponry

o   Face painting and interactive art.

The incursion was timed perfectly for Harmony Week and enabled students to come together to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the oldest continuing culture in the world. Students were reminded that reconciliation is the responsibility of all Australians and that it requires us to recognise and respect the First Nations peoples, acknowledge the injustices of the past as well as ongoing inequalities, and commit towards a more equitable and respectful future for all.
