Design and Technologies

“In a very real way, designers create the human environment; they make the things we use, the clothes we wear, the places we live and work, the food we eat and our modes of communication and mobility. Simply put, design matters. And at a moment in our history in which the scientific community has issued serious warnings about the negative impacts of our flawed designs - from global warming and water pollution to the loss of biodiversity and natural resources-designers have a critical role to play in the creation of a more just, healthful and sustainable world.”

This quote from William McDonough highlights the breadth and importance of design. Here at the College, design thinking starts in Year 7 in the Design and Technology classrooms and continues through all Food Technology and Textiles classes.   Students have opportunity to work on individual tasks and group projects to build their creative design thinking skills. In the collaborative space we see students’ creative ideas, skills and designs come to life.

Kilbreda Textiles Club

Kilbreda Textiles Club (KTC) is a great space to learn from each other, build skills to collaborate, practise their technical skills with machines, experiment with different fabrics and extend themselves with different projects on offer.

The first session of the KTC saw over 35 students collaborate on what they would like to make during our lunchtime sessions. The Design and Technology captains, Alana Wareham and Ella Martin, gathered all of the ideas, which has set a plan for the KTC sessions. With such a great turn up out of students we are running a second group to ensure no one misses out! Our first KTC project was a lined 'zippered' pencil case.

Kilbreda Capes

The Kilbreda Capes challenge from lockdown 2020 is now coming to fruition with the cutting tables being a very busy place at the moment. Students' designs that were selected are being created for the Kilbreda Community.  Students have an opportunity to oversee, discuss and be part of the production team for the capes.

The pleasure in watching students making and creating and solving problems together is the heart of design and technology here at Kilbreda.
