Caritas Project Compassion

Ash Wednesday marked  the beginning of Lent and of Project Compassion here at the College.

“Every year, countless people turn Lent into a demonstration of faith, love and generosity. You can be a part of this incredible community, who believe that there are simple actions we can all take to “be more” for our world.

Make a donation to Project Compassion, start a fundraiser with your school, parish or community; give something up for Lent… there are many ways to put your compassion into action. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be contributing towards a more just and compassionate world.”

 Caritas

As in previous years, we hope to raise much needed funds that Caritas Australia distribute to individuals and communities in need all around the world. Our School Leaders have decided to make this year’s fundraising a House challenge with the House raising the most money being awarded points in the overall House competition. The final tally for each House will be announced on the last day of Term 1 (Holy Thursday).

Recycling

Recycling is an important focus for our Sustainability Team here at the College. We are always searching for ways to reduce our contribution to landfill by reducing or recycling materials.

Over the past two years, our students and staff have been collecting plastic bottle tops to contribute to the Envision Hands project . You can find out more HERE. Unfortunately, the project has stopped its collection and no longer requires bottle tops. Thank you to all students and families who have contributed to this project. Your bottle lids will now need to be disposed of according to your local council’s rules.

  • Kingston Council asks that plastic bottles be emptied, crushed and then the bottle lid to be replaced. Crushing bottles takes up less space and stops the lids being fired off under pressure and posing an injury risk!

Other councils have different rules:

  • Port Phillip Council asks for lids to be disposed of into the landfill bin, as does Mornington Peninsula Council.
  • Bayside Council asks for plastic bottles with lids attached to go into the recycling bin.

We will start a new recycling project to replace this one.

Did you know that soft plastics can be recycled by collecting them and dropping them off at Woolworths and Coles REDcycle bins? You can find out more HERE.

The Sustainability Team will set up collection points around the College over the next couple of weeks.
